General guidelines for blood donors
To give blood transfusions to someone else, you must be healthy, at least 17 years or 16 years if allowed by state law. You must weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated whole blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days) or double red cells in the last 16 weeks (112 days). Students who make donations to the collections and school donors under 19 years must also meet the criteria of size and weight. Learn more about the height and weight for donors age 19 and younger.
"Healthy" means you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic illness like diabetes or high blood pressure, "healthy" also means that you are treated and controlled conditions.
Other aspects of the health history of each potential donor are discussed in the process of donating blood collected before. Each donor receives a brief examination during the temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood count (hemoglobin or hematocrit) are measured.
