Crips, Bloods and "Crack" The 1980's

crack bloodThe introduction of Crack or “Rock” Cocaine in the early 1980’s, had a monumental impact on changing the psyche of the Crip and Blood street gangs. The Crips versus Bloods wars continued, but the allure of making fast money selling “crack” became the highest priority. Members of both the Crips and the Bloods gangs, started selling “crack”.

They utilized the same “selling” methods they had always used when they sold PCP. Basically selling “crack” from street corners, parks, out of vehicles, etc. As “Crack” caught on, the gang members were overwhelmed at the demand. PCP had basically been just a “ghetto” drug, but “Crack” was different. Gang members had difficulty “rocking” it fast enough to keep up with the demand. “Crack” crossed all racial, economic and social barriers. It was not only attractive in the “ghetto”, but it was equally, if not more attractive, to those living in the suburbs. This drug was an instant money maker for these street gangs.

Gang members tried to devise various methods of distributing the “Crack” to accommodate the high volume of “customers”, without actually standing on the local “street corner” risking arrest themselves. As a result, a new phenomenon appeared in the South Central area. “Crack” Houses.

“Crack” houses were homes that had been modified to meet the needs of the drug dealers, plus be a place that would be easily accessible and convenient for the drug buyer. The windows and doors of these houses were all re-enforced with steel security bars. The front security screen door was usually covered with a metal mesh sheet with small holes, and a mail type slot. This allowed the dope dealer inside the house to see who was coming to the front door. It also prevented the buyer from identifying the actual person who was selling them the dope. The money and “Crack” would be exchanged through the “mail slot”. Note: the drug suppliers (gang leaders) themselves would never go into these houses for fear of being arrested.

Generally a few gang members would always be inside these houses. Their belief was that a few extra gang members would offer greater protection for their operation, plus if the house was ever raided by the police the dope could be destroyed easier and faster. In addition, the extra bodies made it more difficult for the police to identify the actual individual that distributed the drugs through the door. This would also make any potential prosecution a little more difficult.

Operating a “Crack” house was a new learning experience for both gangs and law enforcement. For law enforcement, the main problem was being able to enter the house expeditiously, before the drugs were destroyed. For the gang members, it was all about reducing the amount of cocaine that they would lose if their house were raided.

Law enforcement entry techniques developed through the trial and error method. Ever form of entry you could imagine was considered, and sometimes utilized. From rubber wheeled tank type vehicles ramming through the houses to vehicles with wenches pulling off the security bars were just a few. Naturally all of these early methods took time to set up and deploy. As a result they were basically ineffective, except for partially destroying the homes which had usually been rented.

As soon as gang members saw law enforcement setting up one of these types of warrant operations in their neighborhood, warning whistles could be heard throughout the area. The “Crack”, and the dealers were usually gone by the time these operations were set up and implemented. Over time entry techniques were developed that were reasonably stealth and very effective. Some small entry teams could be in a fortified “Crack” house in less than 30 seconds.

The gang drug leaders would initially furnish the houses with enough “Crack” to last a day or so. If law enforcement started to make entry they would immediately start flushing the rock down the toilet. The problem gangs encountered was that they could usually only flush one time, as the water had normally been cut off by law enforcement. A number of “rock” houses kept additional bottles of water on hand should this situation occur, but this was very cumbersome.

As law enforcement became more effective in their entry techniques, gang members cut back the available supply of “crack” to just a couple of hours to minimize any potential loss. They also found a better way of disposing of the “crack”. They would keep a large pan of water boiling on the stove. If law enforcement appeared, they would destroy the “crack” by putting it into the boiling water.

By the middle 1980’s the “Crack” house phenomenon was beginning to disappear. Pagers were becoming the newest rage for the drug dealers. The pagers opened up new methods and possibilities for distributing their “Crack” cocaine. Almost every gang member had his own pager.

Other noticeable changes begin occurring during this time frame. Drug distribution “territories”, along with the Crip and Blood gangster culture, started spreading throughout the city. Both Crips and Bloods begin vying for some of this new “virgin” territory. This caused inter gang violence to reach a fever pitch. Daily shootings became the norm. Eventually, Blood and Crip drug leaders found a common bond that they could all agree on. “Money”.

Some of the gangs that were in the forefront of “Crack” distribution were noticeably more visible, more powerful, and more dangerous. Money was coming into these neighborhoods faster than the gang members could spend it. Gang members bought everything from thoroughbred race horses, prize winning hogs, jewelry, to custom low riders, etc. Money was no object.

A few of these gangs were the:

Mob Piru “Mob James”, “Country Al”, Johnsons, et. al

Grape Street Crips “Honcho”, “Mcgill”, et. al

Santana Block & S/S Crips “Whiskey”, “Gangster”, “Turtle”, “Twins”, et. al

Wayne Day, aka “Honcho” had also purchased his own pager service. Various Crip and Blood gangs utilized his service. Most likely the Blood Gangs did not realize the pager service was owned by their rival “Honcho”.

Gang leaders, like “Honcho”, “Harry O”, McGill, McGowans, Johnsons, et. al, had greater dreams. They could see the potential financial windfall that they would reap if they were able to distribute Rock Cocaine throughout the nation. They followed up on those dreams. They started capitalizing on this lucrative nation wide drug distribution venture by relocating “home boys” in the major cities across America. They also knew the feared Los Angeles gang reputation would help them over come any local neighborhood resistance.

While gang members like “Honcho” were fulfilling their dreams of a nation wide “crack” distribution ring other gang members, like “Easy E”, etc., who had pockets full of drug money, wanted to be singing super stars. They used their drug money to rent studio time to chase those dreams.

Numerous other groups like “Eight Ball”, “NWA”, etc. also tried to break into the entertainment field. “NWA” (niggars with attitudes) were Crip gangsters from Compton. “NWA” was one of the first groups to be moderately successful with their “anti-establishment” gangster lyrics. They were also the forerunners of the successful Compton (Mob Piru, Atlantic Drive Crips, etc.) gangster rappers that appeared on the scene in the 90’s.

A nation wide “crack” distribution ring, spread of the Crip and Blood gangs throughout ever major city in America, and gangster rap was the legacy left by the “crack” dealing OG’s of the 1980’s.

CRIPS AND BLOODS: Made in America

A cluster of neighborhoods in the heart of Southern California is home to two of America's most infamous gangs: the Crips and the Bloods. Over the course of their 40-year feud, more than 15,000 people have been murdered in an ongoing cycle of violence that continues unabated. Neighborhoods are staked out, and rigid boundaries are drawn; crossing a street or taking a wrong turn can mean death. Nearly a quarter of the region’s young men who survive the violence will end up in jail or prison.

Narrated by Forest Whitaker, CRIPS AND BLOODS: Made in America combines in-depth interviews with current and former gang members, educators, historians, family members and experts with historical and present-day footage to graphically portray the rivalry between African American gangs in South Los Angeles. Three former gang members—Ron, Bird and Kumasi—recount their experiences growing up in the neighborhood in the 1950s, when segregation kept blacks and whites strictly separated, both by police-enforced neighborhood boundaries and in public organizations like the Boy Scouts. Young black males began forming their own groups, clubs where they could find a sense of belonging. Fighting between rival clubs became part of that culture, but the only weapons then were a strong pair of fists.

The 1950s were a period of black prosperity in Los Angeles, fed by the abundance of industry-based jobs. By the end of the decade, however, those industries began to disappear, resulting in high rates of unemployment. This downward economic spiral along with years of prejudice, racial profiling and heavy-handed police methods, produced an explosive situation. In 1965, a routine traffic stop erupted into full-scale civil conflict on the streets of Watts. The FBI killed and jailed many leaders of the era’s Black Pride Movement, and without strong leadership to steer youth in positive directions, gangs became active once more. This time, their weapons were guns.

In the film, current gang members describe gang life and the status, protection and other benefits membership gives them, painting a bleak picture of the physical, social and personal devastation that is the hallmark of South Los Angeles. Academics and other experts, including California State Senator Tom Hayden and author Gerald Horne, suggest ways of solving underlying problems, rather than just attacking gang-related street violence. Meanwhile, the most promising solutions may come from the people in the neighborhood itself, where former gang members and other concerned individuals have taken on the task of working with young people and providing a positive alternative to gang membership.

Director Stacy Peralta (Dogtown and Z Boys, Riding Giants) brings his trademark dynamic visual style and storytelling ability to this often-ignored chapter of America's history. Hard-hitting, yet ultimately hopeful, CRIPS AND BLOODS not only documents the emergence of the Bloods and the Crips and their growth beyond the borders of South Central, but also offers insight as to how this continuing tragedy might be resolved.

104 Are Arrested in Connection With Crips-Bloods Alliance

crips_bloodsThe Flocc street gang had an unusual mix of members. It formed out of an alliance, law enforcement officials said, between two groups that have traditionally been rivals: the Crips and the Bloods.

As the gang muscled its way into the drug trade in Far Rockaway and South Jamaica, Queens, and police officers on foot patrols started proving a nuisance to their business, at least one of their members hatched a plan to shoot them from a rooftop, the officials said.

On Friday, law enforcement authorities announced dozens of arrests as a result of a two-year investigation into the gang that they said tied it to at least 2 murders, 11 shootings, a home-invasion robbery and the distribution of cocaine and heroin.

The investigation included thousands of hours of wiretap surveillance by the Police Department’s gang squad and the Queens district attorney’s narcotics investigations bureau.

The investigation began as an examination of narcotics trafficking by Crips and Bloods gangs in the area, officials said. But last year, investigators determined that four gangs with Crips affiliations had joined forces with individual Blood members to create a gang known as Flocc, a derivation of the word “flock,” with the “k” replaced by a “c” for Crip.

The police said 104 people had been arrested and 8 were still being sought. Investigators also seized 60 guns, including AK-47s, Uzi submachine guns and dozens of semiautomatic handguns and revolvers.

Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and the Queens district attorney, Richard A. Brown, stood before a table covered with guns on Friday at 1 Police Plaza to announce the arrests. One of the guns displayed was referred to by the police as a 9-millimeter assault rifle.

That was the rifle the police say Keith Livingston, 40, of South Jamaica, planned to use to shoot officers on foot patrol in Jamaica. The police arrested him in September after hearing him discuss his plans on a wiretapped phone, they said. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal possession of a weapon and conspiracy.

The investigation also led to the arrest of Farrad Smith, 23, a former correction officer who the police say was storing weapons for high-ranking gang members. Police officers searching his Far Rockaway apartment said they found a 9-millimeter pistol that had been stolen from another correction officer, a 12-gauge shotgun and a loaded AK-47.

The police said they arrested the leaders of all four gangs tied to Flocc, including the person officials said was the leader of the entire operation, Gquan Lloyd, 23. He has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon and possession of stolen property. He was being held on $350,000 bail.

Difference Between Crips and Bloods 2010

crip&bloodsCrips was a gang formed in Los Angeles, USA in the late sixties and early seventies. Bloods was mainly a gang formed by smaller street gangs coming together to counter the growing influence of the Crips. The main gang that formed the Bloods was Piru Street Boys.

Raymond Washington formed a gang by the name Baby Avenues or Avenue Cribs signifying the young age of the members of the gang. The gang initially propagated the philosophy that it wanted to protect its neighborhood from outsiders but this claim soon faded away and the gang was openly involved in various criminal activities including robbery, murders, drug dealings, etc. Raymond Washington united his gang with that of Stanley Williams from the east and west side of Los Angles to form an alliance to protect their areas of influence. Washington disliked guns and preferred to settle all differences by hand to hand fights. However, as more and more local gangs joined in and made Crips one of the largest associations of street gangs, his influence diminished till finally he was shot dead in 1979. The gang members were primarily African Americans and had a particular affinity for blue color in their dressing.

The Crips began to target other gangs as they grew in size. It was in this time that some of the non-Crip gangs got together to form an alliance. The main among them were the Pirus or the Piru Street Boys. The gang formed out of this alliance came to be known as Bloods. The members of the Bloods have a particular affinity for the color red in the clothing to identify themselves. The smaller gangs associated with the alliance began to be known as sets. The influence spread across the United States in a few years. The sets on the eastern coast became associated with United Bloods Nation or UBN and this too soon came to be known as only Bloods.

Summary
1. Crips was formed in 1969 by Raymond Washington and Stanley Williams deciding to join their gangs. Bloods was formed with rival gangs coming together to counter the rise of Crips with the main being Piru Street Boys.
2. Crip gang members associate with the color blue in their dresses while the Bloods associate with the color red.
3. The rivalry of these gangs started out over control of the neighborhoods initially but now is more to gain control over the criminal and illegal activities.

Blood Crips Hand Signs

hand signs, blood, cripsCrips Background: The Crips, a fierce rival of the Bloods gang, are an extremely violent street gang which originated in Los Angeles, California in the late 1960's. The original Crips were a Black gang were first reported on the campus of Washington High School in South-Central Los Angles. During the early 1970's the gang grew and branched out to other parts of Los Angeles County. These new subsidiary street gangs were known as sets and they used the term "Crips" in their individual gang name - i.e. Harbor City Crips, Compton Ave Crips.

Membership: Most Crip street gang members are between the ages of 12-24 years. The average age is 17-18. Most members are Black but Whites and Hispanics are known to be members of Crips sets in various parts of the United States. Crip members rarely carry identification and in addition to their street moniker (nick name) use an alias. Gang initiation is usually done in various ways: an armed robbery, an assault or murder, drive by shooting, or a beat-in where other members physically beat up the prospective member. This frequently called a "jump-in" and is designed to show courage and gang loyalty.

Identification: Crips identify with the color blue and usually wear a blue bandanna as an identify item, called the flag.

Crips refer to one another as "Cuzz" and use the letter "C" to replace the letter "B" in their conversations and writings. They have an intricate communications system which involves not only graffiti on walls - which marks their territorial boundaries - but also use of hand signals (flashing) , displaying their colors and wearing selected athletic clothing. The initials BK represent their status as "Blood Killers." Crips seldom wear tattoos. Their graffiti represents past or future gang activity.

Crips, Blood, and "crack"

The 1980's

Introduction Crack or "Rock" of cocaine in the 1980s, has a monumental impact of changing the soul of the Crips gang, blood. Blood Crips against the war continues, but the temptation to sell with quick money "gap" has become the priority. Members of the Crips and Blood gangs, began selling "cracked".

blood piru knowledge
They use the same "sell" their methods are always used when they sell PCP. Basically selling "gap" of street corners, parks, vehicles, etc. While the "crack" was taken, gang members have been overwhelmed by demand. PCP was simply a "ghetto" drug, but the "crack" is different. Gang members have difficulty "rocking" is fast enough to keep up with demand. "Crack" of all races, economic and social barriers. Not only interesting in the ghetto, but it was the same, if not more interesting for those who live in the suburbs. This drug is a manufacturer of instant money to these gangs.

The band members tried to develop various methods of distributing "crack" to reflect the high volume "clients", without actually doing in the local "street corner" risk arrest themselves. Consequently, a new phenomenon emerged in the South Central Region. "Crack House.

"Homes Crack houses have been modified to meet the needs of drug traffickers, in addition to being a place that is easily accessible and convenient for buyers of drugs. The windows and doors of houses are reinforced with bars of Security Steel. Front door security screen is usually closed with a stainless steel wire mesh with small holes, and the type of a mail slot. This allows drug traffickers to the house to see who came to the door of entry. This also prevents buyers from people who actually identify those who sell drugs. The money and the crack will be exchanged through the slot "mail". Note: the drug suppliers (Chief gang) would never go in the house for fear of being arrested.

Usually some members of the gang will always be in these houses. Their belief is that some additional gang members will provide greater protection for their operations, and more if the house had been raided by the police drug can be destroyed more easily and quickly. In addition, the extra weight makes it more difficult for police to identify individuals who actually distributed the drug through the door. This also allows a possible continuation of a little more difficult.

Operating a crack house is a new learning experience for both gangs and law enforcement. For law enforcement, the main problem is to enter the house immediately before the drug was destroyed. For gang members, while it reduced the amount of cocaine that they would lose if their homes were attacked.

Entry techniques for applying law developed by trial and error method. Once the registration form can imagine considered, and is sometimes used. The type of rubber-wheeled tanks of vehicles spent pot lining around the house for vehicles with safety bar wenches off slightly. Of course, all these methods also need time to prepare and distribute. Consequently, they are inherently inefficient, except for some of destroying the houses are usually rented.

Once the gang members see the police put up one of these types of guarantee operations in their environment, warning whistles could be heard throughout the region. The 'crack' and retailers are usually disappeared when the transaction is established and implemented. Over time the techniques developed came quietly enough, and very effective. Several small teams can enter the Fort "crack house in less than 30 seconds.

Initially, the leaders of drug gangs provide homes with a "Crack" to last a day or more. If law enforcement has begun to make their entry will begin flushing the stone in the toilet. Gang problem facing is that they generally can only flush once when the water is usually turned off by the police. A number of "rock" the house of bottled water in the extra hand should this situation occur, but it is very convenient.

As law enforcement becomes more effective in their technical input, gang members are available to reduce the supply "gap" for only a few hours to minimize potential losses. They also found a way to do without "cracked". They will save a large pot of boiling water on the fire. If law enforcement comes, they will destroy the "cracked" by entering into boiling water.

In mid 1980, "Crack house phenomenon began to disappear. Paging became the latest rage for drug traffickers. The pager new method opens the possibility to distribute crack cocaine. Almost all gang members have their own pager.

Other important changes began to occur during this period. The distribution of drugs "zone", in collaboration with Crip gangs and the culture of blood, began to spread throughout the city. Both Crips and Blood began competing for some of these new "virgin" territory. This has led to violence between gangs, reaching its climax. Daily shooting is the norm. Finally, blood and drug Crip leaders find common bonds they could all agree. "Money".

Some gangs are there in the front line "Crack" distribution look more visible, more powerful and more dangerous. The money goes in this environment more rapidly than the gang members could spend. The gang members buy everything from horse racing thoroughbreds, pig won a prize, the jewelery, custom low rider, etc. Money is not a problem.

Some of these gangs are the following:

Mob Piru "Mob James", "STATE", Johnson, et. al

Grape Street Crips "Honcho", "McGill", and. al

Santana Block & S / S Crips "Whiskey", "Gangster", "Turtle," "Twins" and. al

The day Wayne, aka "Honcho" has also bought its own paging service. Various Crip and Blood gangs used their service. Very probably not aware of the services Blood Gangs pager ownership of their rivals "Honcho".

Ringleaders, such as "Honcho", "Harry O", McGill, McGowan, Johnson, et. al, has a bigger dream. They could see the potential windfall they would reap if they are able to distribute cocaine rock across the nation. They follow up on those dreams. They started to use this unfortunate nation wide venture with distribution of drugs moving "boy" house in major cities across America. They also know that fear the reputation of the Los Angeles gang to come help the opposition of the local environment.

Although gang members as "Honcho" fulfill their dreams of a nation wide "crack" the distribution ring other gang members, such as Easy E, etc., which has a pocket full of drug money , want to be a super singing stars. The medicine they use the money to rent studio time to achieve those dreams.

A number of other groups such as "Eight Ball", "NWA", etc. are also trying to break into the entertainment field. "NWA" (niggar with attitude) is a Gangster Crip Compton. "NWA is one of the first group of fairly good results with" anti-establishment "gangster lyrics. They are also a pioneer success Compton (Mob Piru, Atlantic Drive Crips, etc.), the gangster rapper who appeared on the scene in the 90s.

Crips and Blood History

First hand about their real history and myths surrounding the origins and founder of the gang

Introduction: When the World Wide Web, there are web sites, newsletters, and other sources indicating that Stanley "Tookie" Williams is the founder of the Crips. This report with historical information submitted by the 30-year veteran of the sheriff's department in Los Angeles, described the history and origins and the Blood and Crips illustrates the fact that despite being a part This story, Tookie Williams, not the founder or a Crip set the current leader.

History and origin: The original Crips in Los Angeles in the mid to late 1960s, and Blood formed in response to Crips. The two bands subgroups unstructured or series, which comes mainly from the specific environment. Usually, members dressed in typical fashion, with a color screen (associated with the Crips in blue and red with the blood), use monikers, sometimes showing gang names or monikers clothes, and communicate through graffiti. However, when individual members or groups became more serious about drug trafficking, they also become more attentive to attract attention to themselves with the trappings of gang is.

blood piru knowledge, bloods&crips

In the early 1980s, the gang members appeared outside Los Angeles and others in California primarily to sell cocaine. Investigation Report in 1991, placed Crips or blood in 32 countries and 113 cities. However, this change is not regulated by any national leadership. Instead, crimes are often committed or directed by individual leaders (who often change), rather than as a result of some collective or hierarchical decision making process.

The Crips is a free association of 200 gangs, many of whom are at war with each other, and no one recognized or given any kind of central authority. Individual bands is equally weak in their organization. Most are quite fragile coalition of smaller independent bands.

Background

There are many stories about the initial and subsequent expansion and Blood Gangs CRIP. The following paragraphs describe some of the most common myths, and provides information, factual light on the Crips and Blood gangs as witnessed firsthand by Sgt. Curtis Jackson, the Sheriff's Department Los Angeles, retired.

While he was with the LASD, Sgt. Jackson has been recognized nationally and internationally as one of the foremost experts of the United Nations in the street gang. It is considered the "godfather Black Gangs" and be there at the beginning of the phenomenon of street gangs Black.

Crips, fierce competition from a gang of blood

Crips Background: A gang is very high since the street gangs in Los Angeles, California in late 1960. Original Black Crips gang was first reported on the campus of Washington High School in South-Central Los Angeles. In early 1970 the company has grown and launched in other parts of the County of Los Angeles. This new subsidiary of street gangs known as the set and they use the word "Crips" gang in the name of each - namely Harbor City Crips, Crips Compton Ave.

Members: Best Crip gang members street aged 12-24 years. The average age of 17-18. Most members of the White and Black Hispanics but known to be members of Crips sets in various regions of the United States. Crip members are rarely identified and most of their street name (nickname) using an alias. Gang initiation is usually done in several ways: armed robbery, assault or murder, drive by shooting, or fighting, in which other members are physically beaten prospective members. This is often referred to as "jump-ins" and aims to show the courage and loyalty to the band.

Identification: Crips identify with the color blue and usually wore a blue bandana as identifiers, called the flag.

Crips refer to each other as "Cuzz" and use the letter "C" to replace the letter "B" in conversation and writing. They have a complex communication system that involves not only graffiti on the wall - which marked the limits of their territory - but also use hand signals (flashing), displaying their colors and wear sports selected. The initials BK represent their status as "Blood Killers." Crips seldom wear tattoos . Their graffiti represents past or future gang activity.

If not, wait for the year 2028

blood piru knowledge, street blood knowledge

There is one simple way to explain the two gangs, stupid, stupid, and less educated. Thats the best way to describe it. But when they begin to hell with the shit and then they take life and seize weapons and pointing them in the wrong direction and hit a puddle of urine Satan (aka CRIPS) and the cause of several wars. That's screwed up a reputation as the Hells Angels on their asses out of this evil laughter created such nonsense. So Satan called Blood and Crips to the world that is good.

They spread like a virus infecting the general population. The house has been burglarized, civilians have been killed (or sometimes blurred because of their horrible effect) and thus the devil watched with amusement.

Finally, they started supporting artists rap because it causes them more effective. The only bright spot is that the government hired assassins to kill Tupac Shakur. Gang warfare is a drive? Please, if they can not shoot while standing still, then how on earth are they intended, even speeding SUV? More and more rappers were killed. For the good of the world. And as the year 2009, they still held some political power. Howeve, r the political form of their somewhat pathetic and can not even close to DC

By Tom Clancy believes that in 2028, the Blood and Crips and both parties have the Los Angela. One side of the red zone. Another is the blue area and that military action should be taken ...

Crips and Bloods History

Crips
and Bloods History

A first hand account of their real history and the myths surrounding the origin and founders of the gangs

Preface: Throughout the World Wide Web, there are web sites, news reports, and other sources that declare that Stanley "Tookie" Williams was a founder of the Crips. This report, with historical information submitted by a 30 year veteran of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, describes the history and origin of the Crips and Bloods and describes the fact that although he was a part of that history, Tookie Williams, was not a founder, nor an actual leader of a Crip set.

History and origin: The Crips originated in Los Angeles in the mid- to late 1960's, and the Bloods were formed in reaction to the Crips. Both gangs have loosely structured subgroups or sets, most of which are from specific neighborhoods. Typically, members dress in a distinctive fashion, display colors (with blue associated with Crips and red with Bloods), use monikers, sometimes display gang names or monikers on clothing, and communicate through graffiti. However, when individual members or sets become more serious about drug trafficking, they also may become more cautious about calling attention to themselves with these outward signs of gang affiliation.

In the early 1980's, members of both gangs surfaced outside Los Angeles and the rest of California, primarily to sell cocaine. Investigative reports in 1991 placed Crips or Bloods in 32 States and 113 cities. However, these migrations are not orchestrated by any sort of national leadership. Instead, criminal acts often are committed or directed by individual leaders (who change frequently), rather than as the result of some hierarchical or collective decision making process.

The Crips is a loose association of some 200 gangs, many of which are at war with one another, and none of whom recognizes or exerts any kind of central authority. Individual gangs are equally marginal in their organization. Most are loosely knit coalitions of small, autonomous cliques.

Background

There have been many stories regarding the beginning and subsequent expansion of the Crip and Blood Gangs. The following identifies some of the most prevalent myths, and brings to light, factual information regarding the Crips and Bloods Gangs as witnessed first hand by Sgt. Curtis Jackson, Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, retired.

While he was with the LASD, Sgt. Jackson was recognized domestically and internationally as one of the nations foremost experts on street gangs. He is considered to be the "Godfather" of Black Gangs and was there at the beginning of the Black Street Gang phenomenon.

Myth number 1:

* “Crips” originally stood for “Community Resources for Independent People”.

* “Crips” evolved from the word “Crib”.

* “Crip” name started as a result of a newspaper (Los Angeles Sentinel 1972) article that accidentally described a Crib member, who had assaulted someone, as a Crip by mistake.

Truth:

The name “Crip” was short for “cripple”. One of Raymond’s sidekicks walked with a limp. It was originally thought that the individual who limped had been shot in the leg. A crime victim referred to their assailant (Raymond’s group) as being a “crip”, instead of a “cripple”. It has been confirmed that Raymond’s older brother, Reggie, was bow legged and had a bad ankle. His buddies would write “crip” on his Converse tennis shoes as a joke, demeaning his handicap. This was well before the name “Crip” became synonymous with the Crip gang name. This was verified by Raymond’s younger brother (Derard Barton), and a neighbor with first hand knowledge who lived across the street from Raymond.** The name “Crip” was definitely derived from the word “cripple”. This also explains why the original Crips utilized a cane, and walked with an exaggerated limp. The word “Crip” caught on, and stuck just like a lot of nicknames do. The “Crip” name was also given additional publicity as a result of a newspaper(s) account of the above described crime. Note: An original newspaper account, if there was one, had to have occurred in the 1971 time frame, as the Crip name was already wide spread by 1972. The 1972 article by the Sentinel correctly referred to the assailants as being Crips, because that was already their (Crips) established name”.

Myth number 2:

The first Crip Gang started on the “Eastside”. (referring to Eastside of the Harbor Freeway)

Truth:

The gang did start East of the Harbor Freeway., but the dividing line between the Eastside and the Westside, at that time, was Central Ave. An example would be the Kitchen Crips. The Kitchen Crip Gang was located directly east of Central. The Westside Kitchen was directly West of Central. In later years, as the Crip Gangs spread throughout Los Angeles, the Harbor Freeway. became the commonly accepted dividing line between the East and West side.

Myth number 3:

* Raymond Washington’s groups’ original intent was to “continue the revolutionary ideology of the 60’s, and to act as community leaders and protectors of their local neighborhoods”.

* Raymond founded the organization in “response to the increasing level of police harassment of the Black community”.

Truth:

These statements are all romantic folklore with absolutely no substance. Raymond was just a troubled 15 year old kid who hung around other troubled 14 and 15 year old youths. Raymond had been kicked out of a number of schools, and had already been involved in the juvenile detention system. Raymond, at 15, did not have the maturity, or the vision to formulate these great ideological ideas and plans that some “social experts” espouse. Gregory Davis, who has also been identified as being another one of the original leaders was only 14 years old in 1969.

Myth number 4:

Raymond’s Gang was called the Raymond Street Crips.

Truth:

The Raymond Street Crips were located well West and South of Raymond’s home turf. Too far away to be called his gang. That gang probably didn’t even start until after Raymond stopped Crippin’. The first Crip gang was simply called the Crips. When the gang expanded it became the Westside Crips. In later years this area became the East Coast Crips.

Myth number 5:

The original gang attire included a leather coat, patterned after the Panther party.

Truth:

The original gang attire included an ear ring in the left ear, kaki pants, suspenders hanging down, brim type of hat, cane, and Stacy Adams, “Old man comforts” shoes. Gregory Davis, aka Batman, was the poster child for this OG Crip look. Note: Even then, not every Crip had this same look as some of the kids could not afford the clothes. The leather coat look was temporary and short lived at best. The leather coat was supposed to be stolen, and was a demonstration of strength and power as it had to be taken from someone else. This didn’t last long either, as there were not enough leather coats available to be stolen. The cane, the suspenders hanging down, and the exaggerated “limp” look lasted the longest. The blue rag was also an early identifier of Crip association.

Myth number 6:

The Piru Gang originally went by the name, Piru Crips.

Truth:

There is no evidence supporting this claim. Original Piru members have always denied any validity to this claim

Myth number 7:

* In1972 there was only 18 Crip and Blood Gangs operating out of Los Angeles, Compton, and Inglewood. Two independent black gangs were firmly established in the South Central Los Angeles area. Six gangs had territories in the unincorporated areas, e.g. Athens, Florence, and Willowbrook,

* Between 1973 and 1975 the Crips formed a Federation

Truth:

By the end of 1972, every area of South Central Los Angeles, including Compton, East Compton, Florence, Firestone, Athens, Willowbrook and Carson had been divided up and was totally saturated with a street gang presence. The original gangs that were in place in 1972 are still in place today. It should be noted that some Crip street gangs were in place by late 1971.

Myth number 8:

Raymond Washington was the leader of all the Crip gangs.

Truth:

Raymond was the leader of only one gang. His original gang. Each neighborhood had, and has, its’ own leaders. Stanley “Tookie” Williams, and Jimel Barnes were a couple of Crips that were very muscular, and as a result a lot of Crips looked up to them. A number of Crips would follow Tookie and Jimel around events like the Watts Festivals because of their muscular physiques. That was as close at it got to having a single leader. Gang bangers, like Tookie, always wanted and tried to be the single leader of the Crips, but it never worked out. Factually, even Tookie didn’t have his own set. Jimel was the recognized leader of the Avalon Gardens Crips.

Myth number 9:

Between 1973 and 1975 several of the non-Crip gangs decided to form a united federation………because of the Crips sheer numbers they terrorized the other non-Crip gangs, resulting in the first Crip against Blood gang related homicide”.

Truth:

There is no denial a homicide, as described above, may have occurred, but it was not the first homicide between the Bloods and the Crip gangs. A number of homicides had already occurred between these different groups dating back to at least early 1972. It should also be noted that there were no accurate gang homicide statistics prior to 1979.

Myth number 10:

A dramatic increase in the number of gangs from 1978 to 1982, which was evident in the Los Angeles, Compton and Inglewood areas, occurred during the same time when unemployment was rising because of plant closures”.

Truth:

Another piece of Folklore, which attempts to tie some sort of social phenomenon for Crip gang expansion. There was not one single gang added to the Compton, and South Central area during that time frame. All of the original gangs were in place from the early 1970’s to the mid 1970’s, at the latest.

In the beginning - South Central Los Angeles:

When the term “South Central” Los Angeles Area is used, it specifically refers to the area South of Slauson, extending south through the cities of Compton. The East/West borders are basically the Harbor Freeway. on the west and the Long Beach Freeway. on the east. A portion of this area was policed by various police Departments, including LAPD 77th, Firestone Sheriff’s, and Compton PD.

Much has been said about Raymond Washington starting the Crip Gang in 1969. This claim cannot be disputed, but there is no concrete evidence of his gang ever being called the Crips in1969. Raymond and the others, who have been generally recognized as OG’s, were only 14 or 15 years of age in1969. More realistically the Crip Gang was not started, or at least not recognized, until early 1971.

The original Crip Gang members all had some common bonds. They either had an association through their High schools (Fremont, Locke, or Washington), Fred Shaw Home for Boys, Bob Simmon’s Homes for Boys, or Detention Camps. In some cases all four. Most of the OG’s were troubled youths who craved personal recognition. The newspaper article(s) that publicized the Crip gang’s criminal activity, coupled with the attention (fear) they were receiving from their neighborhood became an attractive, volatile aphrodisiac. This recognition gave them a sense of real power, which they loved.

The Crip name, the Crip dress, and the Crip walk spread like fire throughout the Juvenile Justice System. A large number of troubled youth, who were in the juvenile detention system, wanted to be associated with this feared Crip image. Once these juveniles were released, they took this Crip identity back to their own individual neighborhoods, and formed their own Crip Gang. One problem developed though. The most hard core youth of each neighborhood wanted to be the leaders of their own neighborhoods. They wanted to have an alliance with other Crip gangs, but they definitely didn’t want to take orders from any “outside” group, or person. The OG’s continually tried to organize all the Crips into a one central command type of structure. That structure never materialized.

Early Crip Sets

Some of the very earliest OG neighborhood Crip gangs formed along both sides of Central Ave., between Gage St. and 92 St. The Kitchen Crip gang was the first to develop East of Central Ave. The others followed within weeks. A couple of other gangs, including the Avalon Gardens Crips, were the first to form on the West Side of Central. The only other Crip gang outside this “Central Ave.” connection was the Grandee Crips in Compton. Some of the original OG Crip gangs are listed, along with a few of their recognized leaders name and/or nicknames of active members of those particular OG neighborhood gangs. It should be noted that all of the following gangs had 100 plus members.

Avalon Gardens Crips Jimel Barnes

God father, Davis, Koonce, et al

Kitchen Crips Hillis and Lee family

Skull, Red, Woo Boo, Cowboy, et al.

Neighborhood Crips Gregory Davis

Batman, Black Joe, Dog D, et al.

Mafia Crips Steven Robinson

Ba-Ba, Mad Professor, Karate Man, et al.

House Crips, Kenneth Jackson

Black, Iron Man, Pee Wee, et al.

BMCD Foster Grigsby

Deadly Blue, Battle’s, Pookie, et al.

Main Street Crip James Compton

Little James, Squeeky, Moto, et al.

Grandee Crips, Mack Thomas

Sugar Bear, Salty, Too Sweet, et al.

A few other highly visible OG Crips in the early 1970’s were Karate Man, Monkey Man, Light Bulb, Concepcion, and Paddle Foot

Gang Influence

By the end of 1972 every area of the South Central Los Angeles felt the influenced of a street gang. The Crips considered themselves “gangsters”, or street thugs who were involved in every type of criminal activity. Their criminal activity was committed mostly in their own neighborhoods, e.g. burglaries, purse snatches, GTA’s and narcotics. A number of anti-Crip gangs also simultaneously began forming at approximately the same rate as the Crip expansion. The first of these anti-Crip groups was the Piru Gang. This gang was located on Piru Street in the city of Compton. The OG Piru’s came from an upper middle class neighborhood in Compton. Their original purpose of the Pirus for forming was only to keep the Crips from overrunning their own neighborhood. Note: This group did not fit the common societal mold of believing “only poor kids that have no future are drawn to gangs”. A number of the OG Pirus even drove Fleetwood Cadillacs.

Other anti-Crip gangs begin forming alliances with each other to combat the overwhelming Crip Gang influence. I’ve listed some of the earliest original OG anti-Crip gangs, (Blood terminology did not start until the mid to late 1970’s) along with a few of their recognized leaders name and/or nicknames of members of those particular OG neighborhood gangs. It should be noted that all of the following gangs also had over 100 plus members.

Pirus, Sylvester Scott

Puddin, AC, Carters, Tam, et al.

Bishops. Bobby Lavender

Turp, Clay, Space Ghost, Magoo, et al.

Bounty Hunters, Herman Coleman

King Rat, Ali Baba, Red, McGowans, et al.

Leuders Park Pirus, Marcus Nunn

China Dog, Studderbox, Black Bird, et al.

Athens Park Boys, Anthony and Michael White

Junior, Cold Train, Mooney, Butch, et al.

Homicides

A number of homicides occurred between these warring factions over the years. Two of the most notable gang homicide victims were an OG Piru named “Tam the Top”, and an OG Grandee Crip named “Salty”. Their funerals were highly attended by their respective gangs. Each of their funeral processions stretched well over a mile long. Low riders, containing a minimum of four gang bangers each would hang out their vehicle’s windows, yell their gang name, and wave their respective blue or red handkerchiefs, as the funeral procession made its way to their designated cemetery. The shear size of these funerals was an indicator of just how massive the gang problem was going to be.

Anti-Crip Gangs

The anti-Crip Gangs appeared to be much more organized than the Crip Gangs. They apparently had to be for survival sake. One of the most organized anti-Crip gangs was the Bishops. The Bishops were located in the unincorporated area of Firestone. Bobby Lavender was the leader of that gang.

In the early to mid 70’s the Watts Festival was a major attraction in the Watts area. The Festival was held at Will Rodgers Park for a number of years to commemorate “the struggle of the people”, as well as the Watts Riot.

Will Rodgers Park was located directly in the middle of disputed gang territory. The Black Mafia Crip Dogs and the Kitchen Crips territory were located on the north side of the park. The Bounty Hunter gang’s territory was on the south side. The Bishop territory was to the east and other smaller Crip gangs were to the west. Because of the Crips shear size in that area, they generally “controlled” inside the park. During the festival a large number of Crips, led by bare chested Tookie and Jimel Barnes, would walk through the park intimidating Festival attendees. Note: Tookie was a “peer leader” living in the Fred Shaw home for boys on Slater St., in Compton during this time frame. Tookie later moved to the Bob Simmon’s Home for boys on Atlantic Ave. in Compton.

Surrounding the park would be the anti-Crip gangs, just standing and watching. On the west side of the park, a large contingent of Sheriff’s personnel were stationed on standby, should a major incident occur inside the park. Sometime during the evening hours whistling would begin. The anti-Crip group would run into the park. Simultaneously the Crips would start running through the park hitting festival goers, knocking over booths, assaulting, and robbing people as they made their way towards the rival gangs. Once the anti-Crip groups were actually inside the park, fights between the two groups would break out. Shots being fired and people being injured were common place. Sheriff’s deputies would enter the park and make hundreds of gang member arrests. This occurred every night, of every year, the Festival was scheduled.

Bobby Lavendar, from the Bishop gang, saw this Festival problem as an opportunity for him to form a more organized group (gang) called Brothers Unlimited. The Brothers Unlimited would be headed up by him, and Harold Tyiska from the Family Bloods. The group would also include some Crip members to give it an appearance of balance. All of the members were a little older and had all been trained in Marshal Arts. The original membership of Brother Unlimited was approximately 35-50 individuals. Their initial goal was to be the security for the Watt’s Festival, and then use that success as a spring board for bigger and better things. Unfortunately for the Brothers Unlimited, the Watts Festival group lost their permit to hold anymore Festivals in Will Rogers Park due to the gang violence. The Brothers Unlimited also fizzled after a year, or so of trying to get a foothold in the South Central area.

In the early 1970’s the Crips sarcastically referred to the Pirus as Roosters. The Pirus referred to the Crips as Crabs. In the mid 1970’s the anti-Crip gangs joined forces and began calling themselves Bloods. The Crips then begin calling the Bloods “Slobs”. As the name calling evolved, so did the graffiti on the walls. Anytime a “B” or a “C” was written on a wall it would be crossed out by the rival gang. The crossing out on the wall soon evolved into their speech. Crips would substitute the letter “C” in place of a “B”, and conversely the Bloods would do the same thing, but a “B” would be substituted for the “C”, e.g. concrete would be boncrete, etc. Conversation like “what it “C” like, or what it “B” like became common place. “Cuzz” and “Blood” still remain words used in greetings, or in a confrontational situations. Obviously this depends on who they’re talking with.

Also during this same time frame, other changes begin to occur. Crips no longer wanted the notoriety that they once so enjoyed. They soon learned police officers were giving special attention to those individuals wearing the Crip “uniform” dress. They begin to dress “normal” in every manner in hopes of not drawing so much attention from law enforcement. The exception to this was that they always had the color blue on. The same situation was being experienced in the Blood gang areas. Crips started wearing blue baseball caps, and/or blue windbreakers, e.g. Dodgers, etc. It could be something as small as blue shoe laces in their tennis shoes. The same situation occurred with the Bloods, e.g. red base ball hats, etc. This even evolved into the names and types of apparel the gang members would wear, e.g. “C/K” (Calvin Klien) apparel, etc. The Bloods said the C/K stood for Crip Killer, etc., etc.

By the mid 1970’s street gang activity had completely spread throughout the Los Angeles area, including cities like Lynwood. By the early 1980’s, Crack Cocaine became the drug of choice. PCP had previously been the drug of choice by both Crips and Bloods. The Crips and the Bloods soon begin organizing their own drug cartels that would eventually spread throughout the major cities in our country. Names like Freeway Rick, Whitey Enterprises, etc. became synonymous with drug dealing.

The End

In the mid to late 1970’s the founder of the Crip Gang, Raymond Washington, and a few other OG individuals, stepped back from the high visibility of the street gang scene. Raymond began hanging around a motorcycle group, because he said “those youngsters (referring to the Crips and Bloods) were too crazy”. Raymond was murdered on Aug. 9th, 1979 just a few blocks from his home. Tookie continued being the ultimate gangster. Unfortunately for Tookie, the muscular physique that once gained him the attention that he so much craved as a Crip, also made him easily recognizable in his life of crime. Tookie had to make a choice. Leave his life of crime, or leave no witnesses. He chose the latter. Tookie was subsequently arrested for four heinous homicides that he committed in 1979. On December 13th, 2005, after 24 years on death row, Tookie finally paid the ultimate, and final price for living the life of a Crip Gangster.
