The 52 Pueblo Bishops live in a housing project located at 52nd Street and Long Beach Blvd on the East Side of South Central Los Angeles. They flag red (wear red bandanas) and identify as Bloods. Lately though, a lot of Bloods have chosen to sever ties with the Five Dueces when they declared war on their neighbors to the West, the Blood Stone Villians, enemies. Blood on Blood wars are few and far between and while Crips have been killing Crips for years, the general Blood rule is no red on red beefs. Personal disputes arise, but are usually squashed without any fatalities and it's usually handled between the opposing gang members who had the dispute in the first place. Another example of a serious Blood on Blood war is Compton's Tree Top Piru and Neighborhood Piru.


This example of graffiti is on the wall of the project housing unit the Five Dueces call home. ""ES" stands for "Eastside", "Pueblos" is the gang's name, the "1" I can only assume is for their claim of being "#1" and "CK" means "Crip Killers". They also clearly state their enemies: "38" is refering to 38th Street, a mexican gang from the same general area, "ECC" is "East Coast Crips" as a whole (most likely the 59's and Six Pack, which is the four subsets from the 60's: 62, 66, 68 and 69) and the Blood Stone Villians.


This was sprayed on a wall across the street from the project houses on Long Beach Blvd. This area is mostly warehouses and it was basically a free for all of gang tags, mostly done by the Pueblos.

The Pueblo's are mostly black, but have latino members and a latino clique (not sure of the name) that lives within the area that they are cool with. There is also an all Asian Blood gang known as the E/S OBz, which stands for Oriental Boyz. They used to be part of one large gang, but split up into three groups: the E/S OBz which live in East South Central, the W/S OLBz (Oriental Lazy Boyz) who flag red but arent bloods and call Chinatown home and the W/S OBz who live in North Hollywood and are Crips.

Here is a general disclaimer for all posts to come: some photographs are taken while walking and others are from a car window because a lot of photo opportunities creep up out of nowhere so it's a quick snap and we're on our way. Excuse some of the quality.

The "62" stands for the particular street this East Coast Crip clique claims, the "NHC" is for "Neighborhood Crip", which allies them with other NHC Crip gangs such as the Rollin 60's. "Bubblegumsk" means "Bubblegum Killers", which is a derogatory term for Broadway Gangster Crips.



In this photo you can see that they have crossed out the initials of the Broadway Gangster Crips, which is the most common way of stating one's enemies. "K" at the end of song gang's initials means they are _____ Killers, another way of naming enemies. "Flower Killer" more than likely refers to the street by the name of Flower that BGC include in their turf.

What's Up & Welcome...

The purpose of this blog is to use it as a stepping stone to our main goal: publishing a book dedicated to the art & culture that goes hand in hand with the gangs of Los Angeles. So much is considered taboo by the media and it forces far too many people to discredit the culture and tradition that thousands of people practice and make such an important part of their lives each and every day.

The main focus of this project is to create a general understanding of gang graffiti. Gang's use spray paint to mark their territories, call out enemies and even warn people of things that will be going down in the future, but most importantly they also use it to express themselves artistically. From the shottiest of street tags to huge wall-covering murals, this is art and there are messages trying to be conveyed. We hope to give people a better understanding of what these messages mean.

Crips, Bloods & Surenos (mexican gang members) are everywhere in Los Angeles, and so is their art. Some of us are from these hoods, others are just fascinated with it, but we all respect and understand (or hope to achieve a better understanding) the culture that goes hand in hand with being in a street gang in Los Angeles, which is commonly refered to as the "home of the bodybags". We are currently putting in many hours in cars and on foot taking photographs of gang art and cataloging it for display on this website and in our upcoming book.

Also, it must be noted that because we respect the "hood", we wont be revealing any information about contributors or anyone involved with gang life, as we know the LAPD like to use websites as a way to trap and imprison known gang members. We are here to contribute knowledge and the spreading of just that, not to help fill up their prisons.

Also, "Hood Art" is not the name of our organization, company, etc. It's just a monikor. It might change.

A first batch of photographs will be up tonight, as we took a trip to the East Side of South Central to visit a friend/contributor from an anonymous gang. We got some photographs of East Coast 62nd Neighborhood Crip graffiti, so expect that this evening.

Gang member's use of hand signs is called "stacking." The name "cesar" identifies the gang member who did the grafitti. A) The 74 represents the position of the letters "G" and "D" in the alphabet. The letters GD stand for Gangster Disciples, a Folk Nation branch gang out of Chicago.
B) The Star of David, pays respect to David “King David” Barksdale who was the leader of the Devil’s Disciples, a gang from the South Side of Chicago in the 60's and 70's. The letters on the points of the star stand for Love, Life, Loyalty, Understanding, Knowledge and Wisdom.
C) The eight ball shows the unification of the Crips and The Folk Nation.
When the hand signs for Crips and the pitchfork are brought together, they form an 8-ball. A.) "Pirus" stands for Piru Bloods.
B.) The "pitchfork" represents Crips and / or Folk Nation
C.) The "x" over the pitchfork is a "dis" to the Crips from the Bloods

This shows that the Crips / Folks marked this as their territory. The Bloods came in and clamed it as theirs, taking it from the Crips / Folks. The current gang of this area is Bloods indicated by the "Pirus" graffiti being placed above the pitchfork.

Why gangsters must use the symbol of blood and piru for their group, because blood is a symbol to show that it means if you want to have a great power that must be willingly sacrificing blood, piru with them can easily show to its members to act and what to do, more or less mimic those of the military such as the use of a password-the password for war. The Bloods are one of Los Angeles, California street gangs. They are identified by the red color worn by their members, and their gang symbol is the word "blood" spelled out with their hands. The Bloods are made up of various sub-groups known as "sets" between which significant differences exist such as colors, clothing, and operations. Since their formation the Blood gangs have branched out throughout the United States, and have even influenced youth groups using the same name in Europe.Starting in late 1971, the Avalon Garden Crips, Inglewood Crips and various other Crip sets joined forces. They began to expand to non-Crip gang territories such as those controlled by The L.A. Brims, a powerful street gang that had been formed in 1969. Due to the encroachments of the Crips, several gangs eventually became part of the Blood family, including the Bishops and Athens Park boys. The Denver Lanes also had conflicts with the Crips, but were outnumbered and eventually became unknown in California for some time. The Piru Street Boys, who presented a powerful force in Compton, actually collaborated with the Crips prior to 1972, as the Crips had affected the Piru neighborhoods. They have a complex communication system that involves not only graffiti on the wall - which marked the limits of their territory - but also use hand signals (flashing), displaying their colors and wear sports selected. The initials BK represent their status as "Blood Killers." Crips seldom wear tattoos . Their graffiti represents past or future gang activity.

Myths and urban legends - Throughout history there's always a myth about everything - humans, animals, soil, air and sea monster, the fastest ball in the old west, and more.

In this era of gangs, many of which have been said and written about gangs. Unfortunately, too much of what has been said is a myth passed from one person to another until believed to be a reality.

The myth following is an excerpt from my file, but I do not know the source, giving due credit to the author. I'm sure he wanted to share with you.



Myth # 1
Myth - All street gangs is a grass-oriented.

Fact - Some gangs may not claim the region while others may work in several places, even in small towns that are not suspicious.

Myth # 2
Myth - All groups have a leader rigorous and structured.

Fact - Most bands are fairly weak group and have a "so-called" leaders. The new leaders are often waiting in the wings while standing members or leaders who are jailed or killed.

Myth # 3
Myth - The minority of young members of street gangs.

Fact - The teenagers, aged 18 years or less, in fact, write most of gangs. Hardcore members representing 10% - 15% of active gang participants / members.

Myth # 4
Myth women - are not allowed to join the gang.

Facts - Women are allowed to join a large number of gangs. Mara Salvatrucha is the exception. Females are often very difficult and dangerous. Often, detainees were forced to take sides, often along racial lines, with one group or another.

Myth # 10
Myth - The gangs are a problem for law enforcement.

Facts - Gangs are a problem for everyone. Communities need to develop programs for the entire system effectively address the gang problem where you are in childhood. Do not let gangs grow and develop a power base. Gang problem becomes more difficult or impossible to remove.

Blood gang in the individual level of involvement

Gang may involve different levels of commitment and participation to any individual. Type of commitment and involvement in gangs should be described to establish the level of participation for each participant identified.





Level I - Make Believe

* Know the individual gang members, but does not associate with them
* Maybe like, respect, admire or emulate gang members or gang lifestyle gang
* Know about gangs - through newspapers, internet, movies, TV
* Looking at the individual gang members as "Living in a dream world."

* Relax and sometimes partner with gang members
* Maybe like, admire the respect the lifestyle of gang members but not full-time
* Living in or near a gang area or have gang members in the family

* Top of aggressive behavior

Level III - Partner (would-be's)
* Personally knew and admired members of the gang
* Associates regularly with gang members, often in groups, only rarely
* Liberal or favorable attitudes and drug groups
* Mentally ready to join a gang and would do anything for the approval of the band and acceptance
* Adopted by clothing or gang tattoos
* Drop Family
* Identify the gang as a source of power, money and prestige

Level IV - Gang Member
* Associates exclusively with gang members
* May go through a gang initiation
* Generally have a nickname gang

Knowledge is not a good family

Young people join gangs for a variety of reasons. Extraordinary reason for children to join is to respond to needs not met by their family, school or the environment. Here are some reasons why young men decide to become involved with gangs.
