Norfolk, VA Spaight-Jamel, 28, from Portsmouth, Virginia, was sentenced today in federal court in Norfolk to 50 years in prison for his role as leader of a violent response, which in the Tidewater.

Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, made the announcement today after sentencing by United States District Judge Jerome B. Friedman.

"A Guide to the Tidewater gang violence now most of his life behind bars is," said lawyer MacBride. "The band was neighborhood infiltrated with drugs and kept them in fear through killings and intimidation of force. We will continue to work with local partners and federal law enforcement officers to gang members to go out of our street and make our citizens safer their families and communities."

If the cause is unknown, it is called secondary hypertension. In about 5-10% of patients with hypertension, the cause is kidney disease. In about 1-2%, the cause is a hormonal disorder or the use of certain drugs (such as birth control pills).

Another rare cause of hypertension is Phaeochromocytoma, namely tumor on the adrenal gland that produces hormones epinephrine (adrenaline) or norepinephrine (noradrenaline).

Overweight (obesity), an inactive lifestyle (exercise lazy), stress, alcohol or salt in food, can trigger the occurrence of hypertension in those who have a reduced sensitivity. Stress tends to cause increased blood pressure for a while, if the stress has passed, then the blood pressure usually returns to normal.

As the Crips grew in South Central Los Angeles in the early 1970s, it began against other gangs. It was during this time of conflict that several gangs joined forces to combat the growing Crip threat. The most famous band in this group are Piru Street Boys. They lead the revolt against the Crips and was instrumental in the creation of blood-ties in 1972.

In the next 10 years continue to operate the blood and grow in a fragmented. Conflict with the Crips continued and the blood found much in the minority.

Violence exploded in 1984 between the two groups - between 1982nd It was during this time crack hit Los Angeles. Crackme or more of a rock cocaine cheaper and more addictive than the powder of the drug. Transition region are becoming increasingly important, because a lot of blood and Crip sets fought over drug sales locations. Some members moved blood in several major cities around the west coast to expand their drug use. Born in New York's Riker's prison, Iceland, African American inmates created a group as a way to by the Latin Kings, to protect the most often in the prison at the time. Although the United Blood Nation (UBN) was born in prison, as a member who was released to the streets, they formed street gangs on the east coast with the same name, while copies of Los Angeles Blood lifestyle.

Although recognizing the majority of the blood-bands with the color red, the members do not always wear gang identifiers when engaging in criminal activity. On the West Coast members are more likely to use a bandana for identification, while some Blood sets on the East Coast will use a colored bead necklaces.

Although Blood gangs the same name, there is no formal leadership structure that controls all Blood gangs. A Blood gang member Springville Utah may very active in the gangster lifestyle, but have no connection to the Blood gang in the West or East Coast.

True Blood is an American television drama series created and produced by Alan Ball, who also created Six Feet Under. True Blood is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, and details the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional small Louisiana town. The series centers on Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress at a bar, who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).[1][2]

The show is broadcast on the premium cable network HBO in the United States. It is produced by HBO in association with Ball's production company, Your Face Goes Here Entertainment.[1] It premiered on September 7, 2008.

The first season received critical acclaim and won several awards, including one Golden Globe and an Emmy. The show's second 12-episode season premiered on June 14, 2009, and the third season on June 13, 2010. On June 21, 2010, HBO renewed True Blood for a fourth season, to debut in summer 2011.[3]

Development history

Series creator Alan Ball had previously worked with premium cable channel HBO on Six Feet Under, which ran for five seasons. In October 2010 (?), after Six Feet Under's series finished, Ball signed a 12-year agreement with HBO to develop and produce original programming for the network. True Blood became the first project under the deal, after Ball became acquainted with Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mystery books.[4] One day, while early for a dental appointment, Ball was browsing through Barnes and Noble and came across Dead Until Dark, the first installment in Harris's series. He read the entries that followed and became interested in "bringing [Harris's] vision to television".[4][5] However, Harris already had two other adaptation options for the books. She said she chose to work with him, though, because "[Ball] really ‘got’ me. That’s how he convinced me to go with him. I just felt that he understood what I was doing with the books.”

The project's hour-long pilot was ordered concurrently with the finalization of the aforementioned development deal and was written, directed and produced by Balls.[1][4] Cast members Paquin, Kwanten and Trammell were announced in February 2007 and Moyer later on in April.[6][7] The pilot was shot in the early summer of 2007 and was officially ordered to series in August, at which point Ball had already written several more episodes.[1] Production on the series began later that fall,[8] with Brook Kerr, who portrayed Tara Thornton in the original pilot, being replaced by Rutina Wesley.[9] Two more episodes of the series had been filmed before the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike shut down production of the 12-episode first season until 2008.[10] That September, after only the first two episodes of the series had aired, HBO placed an order for a second season of twelve episodes of the show, with production scheduled to commence in January 2009 for a summer premiere.[11]

Title sequence

True Blood's Emmy-nominated title sequence was created by Digital Kitchen, a production studio that was also responsible for creating the title sequence of Six Feet Under and Showtime's Dexter. The sequence, which is primarily composed of portrayals of the show's Deep South setting, is played to "Bad Things" by Jace Everett.[12]
Digital Kitchen wished to explore themes of redemption and forgiveness in the opening title sequence.

Conceptually, Digital Kitchen elected to construct the sequence around the idea of "the whore in the house of prayer"[13] by intermingling contradictory images of sex, violence and religion and displaying them from the point of view of "a supernatural, predatory creature observing human beings from the shadows ..."[12] Digital Kitchen also wished to explore ideas of redemption and forgiveness, and thus arranged for the sequence to progress from morning to night and to culminate in a baptism.[13]

Most of the footage used in the sequence was filmed on location by Digital Kitchen. Crew members took a four-day trip to Louisiana to film and also shot at a Chicago church and on a stage and in a bar in Seattle.[13] Additionally, several Digital Kitchen crew members made cameo appearances in the sequence.

In editing the opening, Digital Kitchen wanted to express how "religious fanaticism" and "sexual energy" could corrupt humans and make them animalistic. Accordingly, several frames of some shots were cut to give movements a jittery feel, while other shots were simply played back very slowly. Individual frames were also splattered with drops of blood.[13] The sequence's transitions were constructed differently, though; they were made with a Polaroid transfer technique. The last frame of one shot and the first frame of another were taken as a single Polaroid photo, which was then divided between emulsion and backing. The emulsion was then filmed being further separated by chemicals and those shots of this separation were placed back into the final edit.[12]

Eight different typefaces, inspired by Southern road signage, were also created manually by Camm Rowland for cast and crew credits, as well as the show's title card.[13]

Cast and characters

Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) is the main character of True Blood series.

True Blood employs a broad ensemble cast composed of regular, central characters and a rotating group of impermanent supporting characters. Though the series is based in the fictional town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, a noticeable number of the actors comprising the cast are originally from outside the United States. In an interview, Ball explained that he didn't intentionally seek out "non-American" actors, but was willing to go anywhere he needed to in order "to find the actor who makes the character breathe". Ball went on to explain that, in casting, there was more of a focus on who would portray the character in a compelling way rather than who would physically resemble the characters from the book. Noting that there's a definite difference between the characters and storylines portrayed in True Blood and the ones depicted in The Southern Vampire Mysteries, he described Harris as being very understanding in terms of how her work was being reinterpreted.[38]

Within the fictional universe depicted in True Blood, the show acknowledges as reality that supernatural creatures (such as vampires, telepaths, and shapeshifters amongst others) exist. There, Sookie is introduced to Fangtasia's owner and the vampire sheriff of "Area 5" in Louisiana: Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).E-4 Eric is immediately interested in Sookie and her strange abilities, but his progeny and assistant Pam (Kristin Bauer) is less impressed.E-4 Eric employs Sookie to find a thief in his bar, but the perpetrator (a vampire) attempts to kill Sookie when she reveals his identity. Though humans attracted to vampires (referred to as "fang bangers") flock to Fangtasia, not all people are accepting of the idea that vampires be given rights equal to those afforded the mortals of the True Blood universe. During the first season, one of the ways in which anti-vampire sentiment is expressed is through regular televised appearances by the "Fellowship of the Sun",E-2 a Dallas-based church that is eventually run by Reverend Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian)E-3 after his father and family are killed in a strange "accident".E-2

During the second season, the influence of Maryann Forrester and the conflict between vampires and humans is expanded. Most of the cast from the first season returns and several new main characters are introduced. The same style of interconnected story telling used in the first season is repeated, with the foremost plot focusing on Maryann Forrester being revealed as a maenadE-19 with the power to influence humans.E-15 She begins by manipulating Tara and Eggs to achieve her strange goals,E-20 but eventually she is able to control almost the entire population of Bon Temps.E-22

Season one

The main mystery of the first season concerns the murders of women connected to Sookie's brother, Jason (Ryan Kwanten). Maudette Pickens and Dawn Green are both strangled shortly after having been alone with Jason. Though Detective Bellefleur has little doubt that Jason is the killer, the town sheriff does not suspect him. Jason and Sookie's grandmother is murdered shortly afterward. At the end of the season it is revealed that Arlene Fowler's fiancé, Rene Lenier, is actually a man named Drew Marshall who has created a false identity, complete with Cajun accent. He has been killing women he considers "fang-bangers".

The first season also focuses on Sookie's relationship with Bill and Sam's relationship with Sookie's friend Tara. Bill explains the rules of being a vampire to Sookie and, after killing a vampire to defend her, is forced to "turn" a young girl named Jessica into a vampire as punishment. In the last episode of the season, Jessica is left under Bill's care. After Maudette and Dawn's murders, Jason becomes addicted to vampire blood and has a short relationship with another addict, Amy Burley, which ends when she is murdered by Drew. The season ends with the discovery of a body in Detective Andy Bellefleur's car in Merlotte's parking lot.

Season two

Season two focuses on two main plots – in the first, the disappearance of the 2,000-year old vampire Sheriff of Area 9, Godric, causes Eric to enlist Sookie and Bill's aid in finding the ancient vampire in Dallas. Their paths cross Jason's as he seeks to discover meaning in his life with the Fellowship of the Sun, a church dedicated to anti-vampire activities.

The second plot line concerns a maenad named Maryann who visits Bon Temps after Tara attracts her attention at the end of the first season. Maryann is a figure from Sam's past and knows his true identity as a shapeshifter. Her influence on the town and its residents results in mayhem that grows more destructive as the season progresses. At the end of the season, Bill proposes to Sookie, but is kidnapped by unknown assailants when Sookie retreats to the bathroom to consider his proposal.

It loosely follows the plot of the second novel of The Southern Vampire Mysteries, Living Dead in Dallas. In addition, the character of Sophie-Anne Leclerq, initially introduced in the sixth novel Definitely Dead, was introduced as a major supporting character.

Season three

On July 30, 2009, HBO confirmed that True Blood would be renewed for a third season,[40] which began shooting on December 3, 2009.[41] It premiered on June 13, 2010, simultaneously on HBO and HBO Canada, and contained 12 episodes.

Season three loosely follows the plot of the third novel of The Southern Vampire Mysteries, Club Dead, and introduces werewolves to the show's mythology. It also introduces the characters of Russell Edgington, the Vampire King of Mississippi, and his private investigator, Franklin Mott. In addition, some characters from the fourth novel Dead to the World are introduced: Crystal Norris as Jason's love interest, her family of werepanthers from Hotshot, and Sookie's fairy godmother, Claudine. Sookie's heritage as part fairy is also revealed later in the season, a major plot element from the eighth novel, From Dead to Worse.

Reception

Critical reception of True Blood has generally been favorable, despite the fact that initial impressions were mixed. The New York Post critic wrote of the opening episodes: "If HBO's new vampire show is any indication, there would still be countless deaths – especially among vampire hunters and the viewers who love them – because everyone would be dying of boredom. And so it is with HBO's new series from death-obsessed Alan Ball, creator of the legendary Six Feet Under, whose new show True Blood, won't so much make your blood run cold as it will leave you cold."[42]

Whereas USA Today concluded: "Sexy, witty and unabashedly peculiar, True Blood is a blood-drenched Southern Gothic romantic parable set in a world where vampires are out and about and campaigning for equal rights. Part mystery, part fantasy, part comedy, and all wildly imaginative exaggeration, [True] Blood proves that there's still vibrant life — or death — left in the 'star-crossed cute lovers' paradigm. You just have to know where to stake your romantic claim."[43]

By the end of the first season, True Blood had a score of 64, indicating generally favorable reviews, on Metacritic, an aggregator of critical responses.[44] The second season received a more favorable score of 74 on Metacritic.[45] As of the third season, True Blood's rating on Metacritic has risen to 79.[46]

Influence

True Blood was the subject of a recent Sesame Street sketch, entitled "True Mud". The parody features puppet versions of Sookie, Bill, Lafayette, Sam, Tara and Sheriff Dearborn. In the skit, Muppet Sookie struggles to fulfill Muppet Bill's pleas for a pint of "True Mud," as the other characters try to speculate if he is a "grouch". [47]

Allegory for LGBT rights

The struggle for vampire equality in True Blood has been seen as an allegory for the LGBT rights movement.[48] Charlaine Harris, the author of the book series on which the show is based, stated that her initial characterization for the vampires were as "...a minority that was trying to get equal rights".[49][50] Several phrases in the series are borrowed and adapted from expressions used against and about LGBT people, such as "God Hates Fangs" (God Hates Fags) and "Coming out of the coffin" (coming out of the closet).[50]

Entertainment Weekly's critic-at-large Ken Tucker wrote that the show is built "around a series of metaphors: Vampire rights stand in for gay rights, and now the clever laughs elicited from this bratty-vampire girl represent an extreme of adolescent rebelliousness".[48] David Bianculli of NPR wrote "[True Blood is] big on allegory, and the tension about accepting vampires into society is an obvious play on civil rights in general, and gay rights in particular".[50] However, the television series' producer Alan Ball rebukes critics, stating that such a comparison is "lazy".[49]

Ratings

The first episode of True Blood debuted at a very modest 1.44 million viewers compared to the network's past drama premiers such as Big Love which premiered at 4.56 million, and John from Cincinnati which debuted at 3.4 million.[51] However, by late November 2008, 6.8 million a week were watching: this figure included repeat and on-demand viewings.[52] The season finale's viewership was 2.4 million.

The second season premiere of the series (June 14, 2009) was viewed by 3.7 million, making it the most watched program on HBO since the series finale of The Sopranos. The total number of viewers for the season premiere, including the late night replay, was 5.1 million.[53] The tenth episode of the second season (August 23, 2009) was seen by 5.3 million viewers, a new record for the series.[54] The second season's finale (September 13, 2009) was seen by 5.1 million viewers. An average of 12.4 million a week watched the second season.[55]

As the Crips grew in South Central Los Angeles in the early 1970s they began targeting other gangs. It was during this time of conflict that several gangs joined forces to combat the growing Crip threat. The most well known gang within this group was the Piru Street Boys. They lead the revolt against the Crips and were instrumental in creating the Bloods gang in 1972.

During the next 10-years the Bloods continued to operate and grow in a fragmented manner. Conflict with the Crips continued and the Bloods found themselves heavily outnumbered.

Between 1982 – 1984 the violence between the two groups skyrocketed. It was during this time crack hit Los Angeles. Crackm or more properly called rock cocainem was cheaper and much more addictive than the powder form of the drug. Gang territories became more important as the many Blood and Crip sets fought over drug sales locations. Some Blood members moved to several large cities throughout the West Coast to expand their drug market. To minimize attention from law enforcement, many Blood gang members abandon wearing obvious identifiers of gang affiliation so they could continue illegal activity with little fear of apprehension.

It was during the late 1980s that the Bloods became a household name. The movie Colors, staring Sean Penn and Robert Duvall was released which focused on the gang problem in Los Angeles. It has been rumored that some movie theaters actually promoted the movie by offering a bandana to movie attendees. It was after this movie that many teens with no connection to the Los Angeles based gang began creating their own Blood gangs. Although many of these groups were nothing more than childish groups mimicking dress and slang they saw in a movie, some soon became involved in violent activity and drug sales comparable to gang activity committed by original Blood gang members in California.

In 1993, a group on the East Coast created a gang known as the United Blood Nation. Born in the Rikers Island New York jail, African American inmates created the group as a way to protect themselves from the Latin Kings, which was the most prevalent group in the jail system at that time. Although the United Blood Nation (UBN) was born in the prison system, as members were paroled to the streets, they formed street gangs on the East Coast under the same name, while emulating the Los Angeles Blood lifestyle.

Although the majority of Blood gangs identify with the color red, members may not always wear gang identifiers when engaging in criminal activity. On the West Coast members are more likely to use a bandana for identification, while some Blood sets on the East Coast will use a colored beaded necklace.

Although Blood gangs share the same name, there is no formal leadership structure that controls all Blood gangs. A Blood gang member in Springville, Utah may be very active in the gangster lifestyle, yet will have no connection to Blood gangs in the West or East Coast.

Bloods will align themselves with other gangs to engage in criminal activity, including their rivals the Crips, although most alliances quickly fade away. The Bloods are known to be involved in all forms of criminal activity, but are mostly known for drug sales.

The United Blood Nation, simply called the Eastcoast Bloods (not to be confused with the West Coast L.A. Street Gang) is primarily a street gang, formed in 1993 within the New York City jail system on Rikers Island's George Mochen Detention Center. GMDC was used to segregate problem inmates from the rest of the detention center. Prior to this time period, the Latin Kings were the most prevalent and organized gang in the NYC jail system. The Latin Kings, a Hispanic Latino street gang, were targeting African-American inmates with violence. These African-American inmates, organized by some of the more violent and charismatic inmates, formed a protection group which they called the United Blood Nation, in imitation of the West Coast gang. Though they closely resemble the Bloods found on the West Coast, the United Blood Nation or Eastcoast Bloods is unaffiliated with them, and therefore didn’t originally share any of their rivalries or their allies. Several of the leaders of this recently created prison gang formed nine New Blood sets to recruit in their neighborhoods across New York and New Jersey.

By 1996, thousands of members of the Blood street gang were establishing themselves as a formidable force among gangs and continued a steady drive for recruitment. At this time, the Bloods were more violent than other gangs but much less organized. Numerous slashings (razor blade or knife attacks) were reported during robberies and discovered to be initiations into the Bloods. This ritual became the trademark for the Bloods. Bloods recruited throughout the East Coast and began spreading their drug networks rapidly. Bloods will burn an upside down triangular shape that resembles a dog paw on their upper arm. The three circular burns, usually from a cigarette, can be found on a member of the Bloods. This is not practiced by the original West Coast Bloods. Some Bloods will have a tattoo of a dog, usually a bulldog, like the Mack Trucks logo. Bloods will also use the acronym M.O.B. (Member of Blood) to identify themselves. This can be seen as a burn scar or sometimes a tattoo. These too are distinctive only for the United Blood Nation Eastcoast Bloods gang, and not their West Coast version. However, one similarity both coasts share the use of the color red, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bulls, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox caps and jerseys (they would wear), also both keep their bandanas or red flags to the right, and they would also wear Chuck Taylor All-Stars.

When translated the name the Hermanos de Pistoleros Latinos prison gang means the "Brotherhood of Latin Gunmen." Also known as the HPL, the group was founded in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in the mid 1980's. The Hermanos de Pistoleros Latinos prison gang has been reported to be involved in many criminal activities to include gambling, inmate assaults, protection rackets, staff intimidation and murder.

Internal problems within the group forced a division among the members and today one faction calls itself the "Sixteen - Twelve," or 16/12. These numbers refer to the 16th and 12th letters of the alphabet; P/L or "Pistoleros Latinos." The other faction calls itself the "Forty-Fives," and uses as one of its known tattoos, the .45 caliber automatic pistol. Although operating as separate factions, the groups follow the constitution and other rules of the HPL.

Membership is for life and membership is for inmates of Latin origin only; persons who speak Spanish or who are descendants of Latin or Hispanic families.

G27-A Prison Gang

The G 27 or El Groupo 27 prison gang is a Hispanic gang that formed in the Puerto Rico prison system about 1979. It is relatively unknown in the United States.

BACKGROUND: A group of inmates who were known as "insectos" formed the gang under the leadership of an inmate known as "El Monota." At about the same time the well known prison gang The Ñeta, was formed, supposedly to combat the G 27 predators and to protect the weaker, more vulnerable inmates.

Members of the G-27 prison gang have found their way into the United States prison systems and since so little is known about the group in this country the following information is provided to hopefully assist corrections and law enforcement personnel in identifying members of the group.

There are several versions as to how the G 27 prison gang was formed. When researching the origin of gangs, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish fact from fiction or legend. The first version below should not be considered as the "official version" but the information was obtained from a source in the Puerto Rico Department of Justice and is considered to be reliable.

G 27 is basically a prison gang which was formed after the murder of the Ñeta leader, Carlos Torres Irriarte, AKA "La Sombra" (The Shadow). After La Sombra's murder, the Ñeta expelled a number of inmates from its ranks. These inmates were known as the "insectos" and they were notoriously known for robbing, beating, and sexually assaulting weaker inmates. They believed that any killing was justified. These acts of violence also extended to women, children and the elderly in the streets. Although the Ñeta is an extremely violent prison gang, the philosophy of the "insectos" did not set well with the group.

These renegades were the core of the G 27 and were transferred to the Guayama (PR) Regional Prison which is located just outside of the "notorious" Manuel A. Perez Housing Project

The G 27 has no prescribed gang tattoos, but prefer to cover their body with large tattoos of the Virgin Mary. (They are also known to have "G 27" and "Puerto Rico" tattooed on their body.)

The only known gang sign is a balled fist with the forefinger and the little finger raised upward.

The group is categorized as being bitter enemies of the Ñeta, extremely violent and ready to riot at any time.

The Ñeta have many rules and laws for Ñeta members but it is unknown if the G 27 carried any of these rules with them to be included as part of their group.

The gang name "G 27" is believed to have originated from the fact that many of the "insectos", when on the street, met and hung out in apartment number "G 27" at the Manuel A. Perez Housing Project.

UNOFFICIAL VERSION - ORIGIN OF G 27

The G 27 (former insectos) formed under the leadership of "El Monota" in a Puerto Rican Jail named Oso Blanco in 1979. These inmates were very ruthless and violent and the Puerto Rican authorities found that they could not control or resolve the problem. That same year the Ñeta was formed by Carlos La Sombra to protect those inmates who could not protect themselves. The G 27 and the Ñeta became bitter enemies and a gang war soon began between the two groups. In 1980 La Sombra developed a plan to end the war in order to maintain the principles of the Ñeta.

El Monota learned that La Sombra, in an attempt to end the war, was trying to set up a meeting with a group of G 27 members. When it appeared that some of the G 27 members were "jumping" to the other side he put out a contract and ordered a "hit" on La Sombra. Later in 1980 four G 27 members were selected to carry out the hit and when the green light was given, the four approached La Sombra in the prison yard and he was surrounded by the four assassins. One of the assassins had a 25 cal. semi-automatic pistol and shot La Sombra in the stomach. The other three assassins stabbed La Sombra and he died in the prison hospital as a result of his wounds.

On September 30, 1981 the Ñeta started a riot. Although El Monota was locked in a prison cell members of the Ñeta broke into the cell and killed him. He reportedly was cut up into little pieces and flushed down the toilet. His ring finger was sent to his mother to let her know that the Ñeta had gotten the revenge against the G 27 that it was seeking.

The Dead Man Inc, prison gang originated as a white gang in the Maryland Department of Corrections about the late 1990's . Perry Roark, one of the original three founders, was respected by the members of the Black Guerilla Family prison gang in the system, but when he tried to join them he was rejected.

Although rejected by the Black Guerrilla Family, the founders of Dead Man Inc. prison gang adopted the BGF basic philosophy which is anti-government and anti-authority. The Dead Man Inc quickly grew in numbers, absorbing smaller gangs along the way, and today it is the third largest gang in the MD DOC, They are known for their violence against inmates and staff and will reportedly do contract murders for the Black Guerrilla Family.

The DMI has now spread outside of the prison walls to the streets and to several other states. In it's haste to grow, some of the lower level leaders allowed non-whites to join and an order was issued that all non-whites had to leave the gang by 4/13/09 or face the consequences. It is unknown what effect this edict had on the membership.

The Bulldog Nation Prison Gang

Gangs in the Fresno, California, area have long gathered under the collective banner of the "Bulldogs". Fresno is in California's central valley area and is the home of California State University, Fresno (CSUF). Fresno is also located approximately in the middle of the state from a north/south perspective. The mascot of California State, Fresno, is, what else, a bulldog. The school colors of CSUF are conveniently enough, red.

This collection of gangs has maintained a lack of affiliation with Hispanic gangs claiming Sureños or Norteños. The Bulldogs claim "14" like Norteños gangs but instead of writing it "NXIV" or "N14" they use "F-14". The F naturally being for Fresno.

During the prison wars of 1984 and 85 the Nuestra Familia, and later, the Northern Structure, tried to recruit inmates claiming F-14. The F-14 inmates resisted these efforts and physical confrontations resulted. This led to an all out war between the prison gangs. The F-14 inmates also continued their "natural" enmity with those Hispanics claiming affiliation with Southern California gangs. They believe that they are a "nation" apart from the Norteños and Sureño gangs.

By 1986 F-14 began adopting the Fresno State Bulldog as its logo and using the initials "BDS". In 1989 Fresno County authorities started noticing that local juvenile gangs were identifying with, and adopting, the Bulldog symbol. These gangs, both juvenile and adult, have been noted for the violent nature of the crimes they commit.

As with most groups that participate in violent activities, the Bulldogs put an emphasis on recruiting in quantity, not quality, of members. A primary means bulldogs use for recruiting is intimidation. As with other gangs they also use family associations, money, drugs and women to recruit members.

As previously stated the Bulldogs have adopted the Bulldog as its logo. It is often seen in tattoos with a spiked collar in a wide variety of poses. Some of the most common poses are with the dog seeming to break through the skin, running, body-building dogs and the bulldog head with dog tags that read "F-14", "BDS" (Bulldogs)or FBD"(Fresno Bulldogs).

Bulldogs, perhaps more so than any gang, have unified their links from the neighborhood street gang, to city affiliations, county affiliations and into state institutions.

The Aryan Brotherhood of Texas prison gang (ABT) originated in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in the early 1980's. It is patterned after the California Aryan Brotherhood prison gang who sanctioned the use of their name.

A council, or steering committee, provides leadership. This committee approves prospective members, makes decisions on gang rules, and is responsible for resolving problems between members. The committee is also the authority, which issues orders for "hits" or "contracts."

Adversarial rivalry exists between the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas and other prison gangs to include the Mandingo Warriors, La Nuestra Familia, Black Guerilla Family and other black groups.

Aryan Brotherhood of Texas gang members frequently attempt to hide their gang affiliation by claiming to be members of the Aryan Nations, which preaches white supremacist views as a religion.

The Arizona Aryan Brotherhood prison gang is a white supremacist group whose members believe in having pure bloodlines in the white race. The group formed in the Arizona Department of Corrections in the mid 1970's.

The Arizona AB believe in the philosophy of "Blood In - Blood Out." To become a member, the prospect must kill someone. The only way out of the group is to be killed.

Members stay to themselves in prison and feel that they do not need the help of any other gang. They are generally respected by the other inmates because of their ability to control and monitor their own activities.

ARIZONA'S OLD MEXICAN MAFIA

This gang is also known as the Arizona Original Mexican Mafia. Established in 1977, it is a faction or chapter of the Mexican Mafia that was formed in the California prison system in the late 1950's. In 1984 a split occurred and a second gang, known as "Arizona's New Mexican Mafia" emerged. A fierce rivalry developed between the two gangs and the Old Mexican Mafia, as well as Mexican Mafia members are subject to attack by the New Mexican Mafia members if they are placed in the prison population together.

The Old Mexican Mafia patterns itself after the organizational structure of the California Mexican Mafia, which includes as its leaders a General, Captains, Lieutenants, and soldiers.

ARIZONA'S NEW MEXICAN MAFIA

Originally, members of the Arizona New Mexican Mafia, belonged to the Arizona Mexican Mafia but in 1984, due to internal conflicts, they split away, rejecting both the traditional Mexican Mafia (California) and the Arizona Mexican Mafia. In order to be completely independent of the other Mexican Mafia gangs, the gang adopted its own constitution, rules and regulations.

As ardent rivals of the out-numbered Mexican Mafia and the Old Mexican Mafia, members of the New Mexican Mafia may attack members of those gangs if they are in the same prison population.

The 415 KUMI is a Black gang that originated in the San Francisco Bay/Berkley area of California in 1985. The are now referred to as the 415 KUMI. 415 represents the area code for the region. When added together, the numbers 4+1+5 = 10. KUMI is the Swahili word for “ten.”

The 415's advocate "taking back the streets" by any means necessary. In California’s Folsom Prison, the 415’s have provided pools of inmates, such as the Bloods, for recruitment into the Black Guerilla Family prison gang – BGF. They aspire to resume activities formerly carried out by the Black Guerilla Family.

KUMI 415 have been reported to use prison guards to authorize violence against fellow inmates, such as the case in August of 2003 when former correctional officer Leon Holston was charged with aiding and abetting, battery with serious bodily injury, filing a false report by a peace officer and unlawful communication with a prisoner (Associated Press Newswires 9 Sep 2004).

The group is led by a supreme leader and will cooperate with the Bloods but not the Crips.

Originating in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (Department of Corrections) activities of the Barrio Azteca prison gang were first tracked within in the system about 1990. The Barrio Azteca has become one of the most violent prison gangs in Texas and has now spread its tentacles to the streets on both sides of the U.S./Mexican border in southwest Texas and southeast New Mexico. Many of the original inmate members were from the West Texas area of El Paso but since organizing, they have permitted some inmates from other parts of the State of Texas to join their ranks.

Like other prison gangs they attempt to control the prison system, and the inmates within the system, through illegal activity. Reported criminal activities have included heavy involvement with drug trafficking organizations (cartels). The gang’s main source of income is derived from smuggling heroin, powdered cocaine, and marijuana from Mexico into the United States for distribution both inside and outside prisons. Other criminal activities include prostitution, kidnapping, arson, auto theft, extortion, intimidation of staff, assaults, and murder.

The organizational structure of the Barrio Azteca is as follows: President, Vice-President, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant and Warrior.

They do not have a specific tattoo but have been known to use an Aztec Indian head. A tattoo with one feather signifies the rank of lieutenant and two feathers, the rank of captain.

Barrio Azteca members are known for their propensity for violence and membership is for life. Serious association with members of other prison gangs such as the Texas Syndicate, La Raza Unida, Aryan Brotherhood of Texas and the Mexican Mafia is not tolerated.

It is believed that a suspected Aryan Circle prospect was responsible for an officer's murder at a southern prison in Texas Department of Criminal Justice in December of 1999. Following that vicious murder, another Aryan circle member stabbed and killed an Aryan Brotherhood of Texas member at a nearby facility.

According to sources, the Aryan Circle was founded in 1985 by Mark Gaspard and was formed due to the fact that some "Whites" had become too radical in their beliefs. The Aryan Circle is believed to consist of three branches; incarcerated men and incarcerated women and an external branch which consists of non-criminal "White" men in the free world. The original AC patch, or tattoo, is a small circle usually worn below the left breast. Their hierarchy consists of a president, vice president, majors, captains, and several other titles.

Beliefs of the AC include separation of the white race from all others for the betterment and preservation of the race. They consider their enemies to be all who are against them and those who attempt to oppress them. Some members are ex-ABT members. The AC have now been designated as a Security Threat Group and members, when identified, are placed in administrative segregation.

Gang Identifiers With Colors

Gangs and gang members, along with types of clothing and tattoos, have traditionally worn colors as a means of identifying themselves and the gang with which they are affiliated. Many non gang members, who innocently wore a gangs colors in the wrong place at the wrong time have been assaulted and even killed.

The following information is intended to show colors that may be used by gangs to identify themselves. These colors may be seen in the clothing worn by the gang members, in their flags, (bandannas) or in their graffiti. Due to the trends of today's gangs to change identifiers that used to be traditional, these colors may not be exact .

This list is not all inclusive. There are many more gangs, spread throughout the United States, that may or may not claim affiliation with a "nation." If you are aware of a well known gang not listed below, send the gang name, their colors and affiliation, if any, to me via Email.

Please note that colors are not a positive identifier of gang affiliation. Colors are but one of the combination of identifiers used by law enforcement and others to identify gang members.

Crips, Bloods and "Crack" The 1980's

The introduction of Crack or “Rock” Cocaine in the early 1980’s, had a monumental impact on changing the psyche of the Crip and Blood street gangs. The Crips versus Bloods wars continued, but the allure of making fast money selling “crack” became the highest priority. Members of both the Crips and the Bloods gangs, started selling “crack”.

They utilized the same “selling” methods they had always used when they sold PCP. Basically selling “crack” from street corners, parks, out of vehicles, etc. As “Crack” caught on, the gang members were overwhelmed at the demand. PCP had basically been just a “ghetto” drug, but “Crack” was different. Gang members had difficulty “rocking” it fast enough to keep up with the demand. “Crack” crossed all racial, economic and social barriers. It was not only attractive in the “ghetto”, but it was equally, if not more attractive, to those living in the suburbs. This drug was an instant money maker for these street gangs.

Gang members tried to devise various methods of distributing the “Crack” to accommodate the high volume of “customers”, without actually standing on the local “street corner” risking arrest themselves. As a result, a new phenomenon appeared in the South Central area. “Crack” Houses.

“Crack” houses were homes that had been modified to meet the needs of the drug dealers, plus be a place that would be easily accessible and convenient for the drug buyer. The windows and doors of these houses were all re-enforced with steel security bars. The front security screen door was usually covered with a metal mesh sheet with small holes, and a mail type slot. This allowed the dope dealer inside the house to see who was coming to the front door. It also prevented the buyer from identifying the actual person who was selling them the dope. The money and “Crack” would be exchanged through the “mail slot”. Note: the drug suppliers (gang leaders) themselves would never go into these houses for fear of being arrested.

Generally a few gang members would always be inside these houses. Their belief was that a few extra gang members would offer greater protection for their operation, plus if the house was ever raided by the police the dope could be destroyed easier and faster. In addition, the extra bodies made it more difficult for the police to identify the actual individual that distributed the drugs through the door. This would also make any potential prosecution a little more difficult.

Operating a “Crack” house was a new learning experience for both gangs and law enforcement. For law enforcement, the main problem was being able to enter the house expeditiously, before the drugs were destroyed. For the gang members, it was all about reducing the amount of cocaine that they would lose if their house were raided.

Law enforcement entry techniques developed through the trial and error method. Ever form of entry you could imagine was considered, and sometimes utilized. From rubber wheeled tank type vehicles ramming through the houses to vehicles with wenches pulling off the security bars were just a few. Naturally all of these early methods took time to set up and deploy. As a result they were basically ineffective, except for partially destroying the homes which had usually been rented.

As soon as gang members saw law enforcement setting up one of these types of warrant operations in their neighborhood, warning whistles could be heard throughout the area. The “Crack”, and the dealers were usually gone by the time these operations were set up and implemented. Over time entry techniques were developed that were reasonably stealth and very effective. Some small entry teams could be in a fortified “Crack” house in less than 30 seconds.

The gang drug leaders would initially furnish the houses with enough “Crack” to last a day or so. If law enforcement started to make entry they would immediately start flushing the rock down the toilet. The problem gangs encountered was that they could usually only flush one time, as the water had normally been cut off by law enforcement. A number of “rock” houses kept additional bottles of water on hand should this situation occur, but this was very cumbersome.

As law enforcement became more effective in their entry techniques, gang members cut back the available supply of “crack” to just a couple of hours to minimize any potential loss. They also found a better way of disposing of the “crack”. They would keep a large pan of water boiling on the stove. If law enforcement appeared, they would destroy the “crack” by putting it into the boiling water.

By the middle 1980’s the “Crack” house phenomenon was beginning to disappear. Pagers were becoming the newest rage for the drug dealers. The pagers opened up new methods and possibilities for distributing their “Crack” cocaine. Almost every gang member had his own pager.

Other noticeable changes begin occurring during this time frame. Drug distribution “territories”, along with the Crip and Blood gangster culture, started spreading throughout the city. Both Crips and Bloods begin vying for some of this new “virgin” territory. This caused inter gang violence to reach a fever pitch. Daily shootings became the norm. Eventually, Blood and Crip drug leaders found a common bond that they could all agree on. “Money”.

Some of the gangs that were in the forefront of “Crack” distribution were noticeably more visible, more powerful, and more dangerous. Money was coming into these neighborhoods faster than the gang members could spend it. Gang members bought everything from thoroughbred race horses, prize winning hogs, jewelry, to custom low riders, etc. Money was no object.

Santana Block & S/S Crips “Whiskey”, “Gangster”, “Turtle”, “Twins”, et. al

Wayne Day, aka “Honcho” had also purchased his own pager service. Various Crip and Blood gangs utilized his service. Most likely the Blood Gangs did not realize the pager service was owned by their rival “Honcho”.

Gang leaders, like “Honcho”, “Harry O”, McGill, McGowans, Johnsons, et. al, had greater dreams. They could see the potential financial windfall that they would reap if they were able to distribute Rock Cocaine throughout the nation. They followed up on those dreams. They started capitalizing on this lucrative nation wide drug distribution venture by relocating “home boys” in the major cities across America. They also knew the feared Los Angeles gang reputation would help them over come any local neighborhood resistance.

While gang members like “Honcho” were fulfilling their dreams of a nation wide “crack” distribution ring other gang members, like “Easy E”, etc., who had pockets full of drug money, wanted to be singing super stars. They used their drug money to rent studio time to chase those dreams.

Numerous other groups like “Eight Ball”, “NWA”, etc. also tried to break into the entertainment field. “NWA” (niggars with attitudes) were Crip gangsters from Compton. “NWA” was one of the first groups to be moderately successful with their “anti-establishment” gangster lyrics. They were also the forerunners of the successful Compton (Mob Piru, Atlantic Drive Crips, etc.) gangster rappers that appeared on the scene in the 90’s.

A nation wide “crack” distribution ring, spread of the Crip and Blood gangs throughout ever major city in America, and gangster rap was the legacy left by the “crack” dealing OG’s of the 1980’s.

Prison Blood Gang

Started in Los Angeles as a street gang in the 1960s, spread to Texas prisons in the 1980s. Besides serving the broader purpose of neighborhood protection, the Bloods street gang originally arose as an opposing force to their rivals the Crips, who had been allying with various other gangs in the 1970s and becoming more powerful. As a result, the Piru gang allied with the Denver Lanes, the LA Brims and the Lueeders Park Hustlers to become the Bloods in 1972. "Bloods" was a term that African-American fighting men called each other in the Vietnam War. The Pirus later changed their name to Bloods.

The East Coast Bloods began in 1993 in New York City. Leonard "Deadeye" MacKenzie, then 26-year-old inmate from Brooklyn living inside a Rikers Island cell, and fellow prisoner O.G. "Original Gangsta" Mack, founded the New York chapter of the United Blood Nation in 1993. Deadeye is now in his late 30s and is incarcerated in upstate New York.

By the late 1990s, New York Latin Kings leader Antonio Fernandez (AKA King Tone) aknowledged that the Bloods have begun to dominate New York's prison system, and that his own gang has abandoned criminal operations in favour of political-activism. Because of this abatement in Latin King crime, the Bloods have a stronger and larger population in jail.

109. United Blood Nation (UBN) - the UBN originated in California in the mid 1980s as a means to consolidate Bloods into one Nation of Bloods. The United Blood Nation spread to New York City prisons in the 1990s (Rikers Island), and have since been reported prominently across the eastern seaboard. These latter Bloods are also referred to as the East Coast Bloods. According to the Gaithersburg Police Department, quoted in the Baltimore Sun (18 March 2005) , East Coast-based UBN members focus on extortion and prostitution, while the L.A.-based Bloods focus on the illegal drug trade. However, the association between the UBN and the Westcoast-Bloods is often confused. Some say the United Blood Nation and the Bloods are not formally connected, and that UBN started without the permission of the westcoast Bloods, operating on its own with its own leaders and identifiers.

Most of the primarily Black street gang operates in prisons and on the street across much of California, but they have long since spread to other states. They have approximately 5000 members in Los Angeles alone (where they operate their national headquarters), but have set up chapters in Chicago, New York, New Jersey, Seattle-Tacoma, and Little Rock, Arkansas.

New York's Department of Corrections recently started up a Gang Intelligence Unit that identified the different Blood sets operating in New York prisons and jails, including the Gangsta Killer Bloods, the Sex Money Murder Bloods, the Concepts of War, and the Nine Trey Gangstas. New York's prison system has suffered considerable challenges from Bloods inside state prisons, with many corrections officers saying that the rise of the Bloods have resulted in making themselves feel "targeted" for the first time. According to the Village Voice's coverage, staff often get hurt intervening in conflicts, and have begun getting "popped without warning, with no rational explanation" (21 October 1997 The Village Voice).

Because it has no written constitution, the Bloods are officially labeled a "security threat group" in prison, not a street gang per se. The gang deals in murder, conspiracy, credit card fraud, extortion, prostitution, and drug trafficking. Despite the stigma of violence, founding Blood member Omar Portee started the gang for the purpose of "brothers getting together, people getting together, fighting oppression" and not to advocate violence and killing.

According to news reports, the following members have (or have had) alleged executive connections:

* Omar Portee, aka OG Mack" or "The Big Homie", was alleged leader of the Rikers Island prison gang called the Universal Blood Nation, which then became the East Coast chapter of the Bloods street gang. He was sentenced in 2003 to 50 years in prison for murder conspiracy, credit card fraud and drug selling
* Oscar Izquierdo,Grand Master OG, who helped form the BLACK P. Stones, and founded the Egyptian Kings & Vampires. He is around 80yrs old and is reportedly alive, in retirement.
* Lemrey Andrews, alleged lieutenant
* Eric Nikwan Barnett, alleged leader of the Harford County, Maryland Bloods
* Shaidon Blake, reputed high-ranking of the Bloods in Los Angeles
* David "Duke" Allen, reported head leader of the Newark, NJ chapter, was recently the focus of a 500-strong police raid from local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, which secured over 100 arrests. He was apparently operating as "godfather" from within Trenton State Prison in New Jersey.
* Sherman Adams (A.K.A "Sherm Da Worm"), Queens native and leader of the Rikers Island Blood Set in the 1990s, serving two life sentences. Dubbed the "Superior of All Adolescents" as a teen, based on his penchant for slicing rivals with a razor, Adams gained local notoriety in New York by broadcasting the message that the Bloods activities were aimed at representing the interests of African American inmates in jail. As a result of his flair for blade-weilding, he was assigned the corrections department's highest security rating, Code 2. Correctional officials literally treated him with kid-gloves, covering his hands with black mitts when he left his cell for visitors or for court appearances. In 1997, he was the highest ranking Blood member inside Rikers's Adolescent Reception and Detention Center.

The Bloods street gang has become one of the most violent and notorious criminal organizations, spreading its influence in the U.S. from coast to coast. A traditionally African American gang, Bloods membership today includes Caucasians, Hispanics, and Asians. Blood members are involved in a variety of criminal activities including murder, assault, robbery, and narcotics distribution. Nationally, gang membership in the Bloods has been estimated between 15,000 and 20,000 members.1 Blood sets range from highly organized and structured groups similar to the Italian Mafia to loosely organized cliques with little discipline and loyalty. The Bloods have grown in popularity over the years thanks in part to the proliferation of music, movies, and television shows glorifying the “gangsta” lifestyle as well as social networking sites and the vast amount of information on the gang available on the Internet. Current intelligence gathered by the Virginia Fusion Center and other law enforcement agencies indicates the Bloods are a significant criminal threat to the Commonwealth and will continue to grow in numbers and operational scope.

SYMBOLS AND IDENTIFICATION

The Bloods, like many street gangs, have created a unique form of identification including language, apparel, tattoos, graffiti, and hand signs. The gang has created an entire subculture with variations from coast to coast and set to set.

Colors:

Traditional Blood colors are red and black, but sets have been known to utilize green, brown, pink, beige, and orange as well. The colors a set chooses are determined by their influences, alliances, and preferences; however, a trend has also been noted where gangs are choosing to refrain from wearing their traditional red to deflect attention from law enforcement. Colors are worn as a sign of pride in their gang affiliation as well as an intimidation factor to non-gang members and rivals. Gang members will represent their set by “flagging,” or wearing bandanas. These bandanas or “flags” can be worn around the head, face, wrist, ankles, or in their back pocket. Having a flag is very significant to a gang member; typically flags are given at the time of initiation into the gang. It is considered disrespectful to let a flag fall on the ground and rival gang members will make a show of throwing their rival’s flag on the ground and stepping on it to show disrespect.

Beyond wearing flags to show their gang affiliation, Blood members often wear clothing, jewelry, and other accessories tied to their gang to represent their set. Any type of apparel in their traditional color of red can be exploited by gang members including clothing with cartoon characters and sports paraphernalia. Gang members may also wear handmade bead necklaces and modified rosaries in their gang colors.

Gang Graffiti:

Graffiti has often been described as the “newspaper of the streets.” Careful analysis of gang graffiti can indicate the gang and set, the artist or tagger, their affiliation, rival gangs, and current gang activity. Gangs use graffiti to claim territory, and where there are several gangs present, graffiti may be marked out by rival gangs and replaced with their own. Gang members may also venture into their rival’s territory to deface property with graffiti as a sign of disrespect and a challenge to their rival. Typical gang graffiti is usually in a single color and will be simple in design. Complex and colorful graffiti is generally not gang related.

GANG ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE

Hierarchy within the gang structure may take several different forms depending on the gang’s affiliation to the West or East Coast. Sets have been known to adopt a paramilitary structure as well as a mafia inspired hierarchy. Below are two examples of hierarchy used.

Gang sets may use additional organizational structures including ranks of ministers, captains, and lieutenants. The head of the set is typically known as an Original Gangster (OG) or Godfather. The set leader may be in contact with other set leaders but the lower level soldiers may have no knowledge of other sets, their activities, or their leadership.

Blood sets that share set names with the larger West Coast14 and East Coast Bloods may not be directly connected to the larger gangs but usually have knowledge of the gang’s history and rules. Many Blood gangs operate as independent sets although members may know or be related to Bloods in other areas. Additionally, sets may be connected through inmates in the prison system. Many small local gangs’ ties to the larger Bloods sets may be tenuous at best. These smaller sets may mimic the culture of the Bloods in terms of colors, clothing, and tattoos; however, their membership and scope of criminal activity is primarily local.

Bloods engage in local drug sales, robbery, burglary, and assaults within and between gang members. Violence can also erupt as they either defend drug territory or if they perceive that someone is not showing them “respect.” Often those trying to be accepted as members are most violent. New members are often required to commit a crime to demonstrate their commitment to the gang and/or to prove they are not cops.

Membership

Bloods refers to a loosely structured association of smaller street gangs, known as “sets,” which has adopted a common gang culture. Each set has its own leader and generally operates independently from the others.

Most Bloods members are African American males, although some sets have recruited female members as well as members from other races and ethnic backgrounds. Members range in age from early teens to mid-twenties, however some hold leadership positions into their late twenties and occasionally thirties.

There is no known national leader of the Bloods but individual Bloods sets have a hierarchical leadership structure with identifiable levels of membership. These levels of membership indicate status within a gang. A leader, typically an older member with a more extensive criminal background, runs each set. A set leader is not elected but rather asserts himself by developing and managing the gang’s criminal enterprises through his reputation for violence and ruthlessness and through his personal charisma. The majority of set members are called “Soldiers,” who are typically between the ages of 16 and 22. Soldiers have a strong sense of commitment to their set and are extremely dangerous because of their willingness to use violence both to obtain the respect of gang members and to respond to any person who “disrespects” the set. “Associates” are not full members, but they identify with the gang and take part in various criminal activities. To the extent that women belong to the gang, they are usually associate members and tend to be used by their male counterparts to carry weapons, hold drugs, or by prostituting themselves to make money for their set.

Recruitment is often influenced by a recruitee’s environment. Bloods recruit heavily among school-age youth in predominantly poor African American communities. Gang membership offers youth a sense of belonging and protection. It also offers immediate gratification to economically disadvantaged youth who view the trappings of gang life—gold jewelry, cash, expensive sports clothing—as particularly alluring.

Bloods members may go through different types of initiations. Some may join the gang because they are friends or relatives of the gang leaders. Others go through an initiation process that might include committing an armed robbery to bring something of value back to the gang, performing an act of violence, or being beaten by members in a ceremony called a “beat-in,” “kangaroo walk,” or “bull-pen.” This initiation is meant to test the courage and loyalty of the member. In some sets, the commission of a criminal act is also meant to prove that the initiate is not a police officer. Female associates undergo a similar initiation process; some sets require women to be “sexed in” by having sex with some or all of the set members.

Identification

Bloods members identify themselves through various gang indicators such as colors, clothing, symbols, tattoos, jewelry, graffiti, language, and hand signs.

The Bloods gang color is red. They like to wear sports clothing, including team “Starter” jackets that show their gang color. Some of their favorite teams include the San Francisco Forty-Niners, the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Chicago Bulls. They are also known to wear Dallas Cowboys clothing, whose logo contains a five-pointed star. It is important to note that many young people wear these colors and sports clothing and these indicators alone should not be viewed as evidence of gang membership.

The most commonly used Bloods symbols include the number “5,” the five-pointed star, and the five-pointed crown. These symbols are meant to show the Bloods’ affiliation with the People Nation, a large coalition of affiliates created to protect alliance members within the federal and state prison systems. These symbols may be seen in the tattoos, jewelry, and clothing that gang members wear as well as in gang graffiti, which is used by the Bloods to mark their territory. Many graffiti include gang name, nicknames, declaration of loyalty, threats against rival gangs, or a description of criminal acts in which the gang has been involved. Bloods graffiti might also include the word “Piru” which refers to the fact that the first known Bloods gang was formed by individuals from Piru Street in Compton, California. Finally, Bloods graffiti might include rival gang symbols (particularly those of the Crips) that are drawn upside down. This is meant as an insult to the rival group and its symbols.

Bloods members also have a unique language. Bloods greet each other using the word “Blood” and often avoid using words with the letter “C.” Finally, Bloods use hand signs to communicate with one another. Hand signs may be a singular movement, like the American Sign Language letter “B,” or a series of movements using one or both hands for more complex phrases.

United Blood Nation (UBN) or East Coast Bloods initiates often receive a dog-paw mark, represented by three dots often burned with a cigarette, on their right shoulder. Other UBN symbols include a bulldog and a bull.

Overview

Individual Bloods sets exist in virtually every state and generally fall into three categories—those associated with the original Los Angeles-based Bloods gangs, those affiliated with the United Blood Nation (UBN), and independent gangs that adopt some of the symbols and culture of Bloods.

The oldest and most familiar Bloods sets formed in the early 1970s in Los Angeles to provide protection from the much larger Crips street gang association. At the time, Crips sets outnumbered Bloods sets by three to one. To assert their power despite this difference in numbers, Bloods sets became increasingly violent, especially against rival Crips members.

During the 1980s, Bloods gang members began distributing crack cocaine in Los Angeles. The huge profits generated by the crack cocaine market swelled the ranks of Bloods sets and induced many “entrepreneurial” members to migrate to other cities to set up new markets. The glorification of “gangster life” through movies like “Colors” also encouraged youth throughout the country to emulate the Bloods culture, symbols, and colors.

Bloods on the East coast are often referred to as the United Blood Nation. African-American inmates founded the UBN, also known as the East Coast Bloods, in the New York City Department of Corrections in 1993 to protect themselves from attacks by Latino prison gangs. The UBN was emulating the Bloods street gangs in Los Angeles. But while there is some cultural affinity between LA-based Bloods and UBN, their structure and philosophy are different, and they act independently of each other. The UBN, for example, tends to be more organized and the sets share a comprehensive philosophy, expressed in an oath, a prayer, a song, a motto, a concept of war, and 31 common rules. UBN sets also tend to be more racially diverse. UBN sets are most active in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.

Most Maryland Bloods groups have either a line of communication or a lineage that goes back to the New York/New Jersey faction of the UBN. In the housing complexes where these gangs are active, there is considerable evidence of links with Bloods members from New Jersey and New York. Some families move from NJ/NY to get away from gang activity but end up bringing youth who identify themselves with these gangs to the area. However, Bloods in Maryland are typically independent gangs although members may know or be related to Bloods in other areas. They follow the “culture” of the Bloods gang in terms of colors, clothing, tattoos, however their membership and criminal activity are primarily local.

Maryland Activity

Law enforcement officers from Baltimore City and Baltimore, Harford, and Prince George’s counties and Hagerstown have documented Bloods in their jurisdictions. Carroll and Frederick counties have a small Bloods presence. These gangs are dominantly African American, but there are some Caucasian members, as well. Many of the Bloods do not wear gang colors and are closemouthed about their membership and activities. Bloods sets have a high level of transience with membership being fluid and interaction with New York and New Jersey Bloods. Most of these gangs are involved in street level distribution of drugs, robberies, and assaults.

Some New York Bloods come to the area to sell drugs and are then arrested and incarcerated in Maryland. Given the length of their drug sentences (often 4 to6 years), members’ families often move from New York to Maryland to make visitations easier. Those families then build ties in the community and when the family member who was incarcerated is released they stay in Maryland, especially in Baltimore and Hagerstown.

Allies and Rivals

Bloods consider themselves allies with members of the People Nation and rivals of all gangs associated with the Folk Nation gang alliance. These alliances were established in the 1980s to protect alliance members within the federal and state prison systems. The People Nation alliance includes Black Peace Stones, Cobra Stones, Insane Popes, Gaylords, Future Stones, Insane Unknown, King Cobras, Latin Counts, Latin Dragons, Latin Kings, Latin Pachucos, Latin Saints, Spanish Lords, and Vice Lord Nation. The Folk Nation alliance members (and thus, Bloods rivals) include the Bloods’ biggest rival, the Crips, as well as many other gangs, including the Gangster Disciples, the Black Disciples, and the Black Gangsters among others.

In some instances, Bloods and UBN sets will associate with traditional rival gangs, such as the Crips or the Latin Kings, when such associations benefit the criminal enterprises of both gangs.

Tattoos:

Many gang members will have at least one gang related tattoo or branding. The photo to the left represents a “dog paw” and is typically made using the heated barrel of a handgun. The dog paws are very common on Bloods members and are often burned into the right shoulder or upper arm area. Gang members may refer to the dog paws as “triple Os” and the marks may be present in graffiti as well. Conventional Blood tattoos may include the word “blood,” the set name, fivepointed stars or crowns, the member’s street name, weapons, tear/blood drops, and pit bulls.19 The tattoo’s craftsmanship can range from crude jail or homemade designs to intricate professional work. Tattoos and brands, particularly the dog paws, may be given upon initiation into the gang, and they may also signify the rank of the member. When encountering suspected gang members, tattoos should be documented as they can reveal a member’s set affiliation, rank, involvement in criminal activity, and years of gang participation.

Gang sets may use additional organizational structures including ranks of ministers, captains, and lieutenants. The head of the set is typically known as an Original Gangster (OG) or Godfather. The set leader may be in contact with other set leaders but the lower level soldiers may have no knowledge of other sets, their activities, or their leadership.

Blood sets that share set names with the larger West Coast14 and East Coast Bloods may not be directly connected to the larger gangs but usually have knowledge of the gang’s history and rules. Many Blood gangs operate as independent sets although members may know or be related to Bloods in other areas. Additionally, sets may be connected through inmates in the prison system. Many small local gangs’ ties to the larger Bloods sets may be tenuous at best. These smaller sets may mimic the culture of the Bloods in terms of colors, clothing, and tattoos; however, their membership and scope of criminal activity is primarily local.

The images as chilling as they are heartbreaking: An infant with a semiautomatic handgun next to each tiny shoulder. A child no more than a year old decked out in blood-red gang gear.

"They call them Blood drops, stains, rims," a former Staten Island Bloods gang member said of the nicknames gang parents give their children.

Incredibly, parents "bless" and initiate their babies into violent gangs like the Crips and Bloods - teaching chubby little fingers to fold into gang signs even before the tots mouth their first words.

Drive-by shootouts, murder and drug deals have always been a sad part of gang life, but recruitment from one generation to the next has become more prominent in the city where gangs only started showing their might in the mid-1990s.

"We're seeing more children who are being exposed to the gang world because their parents are members," said Deanna Rodriguez, Brooklyn district attorney gang bureau chief.

"This is part of their identity," Rodriguez said. "As long as they can remember, they've been part of the Bloods, Crips or the Latin Kings. This is what life is and they don't understand the concept of what life is outside that."

NYPD statistics bear out the sad truth: There were 713 gang incidents in New York last year, up from 554 in 2006.

While city officials estimate there are about 17,000 known gang members here, experts say the actual number is double that - not even including small neighborhood gangs.

The nation's three biggest gang cities are Los Angeles, Chicago and New York, said Arlen Egley of the National Youth Gang Organization.

Some of the misguided parents think teaching little ones the gang life is cute. Others have learned the hard way.

"My first child - he was only 6 months old when he got blessed into it," said King Ironman, a Bronx member of the Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation gang.

Then the boy was killed in a drive-by shootout.

"The target was me ... he was only 2 years old," Ironman said.

Although he says he hasn't been active for nearly 10 years and now tries to talk young people out of joining gangs, Ironman still "blessed" two more sons into the predominantly Puerto Rican gang. "Families have to do that to be part of the nation," he said.

One son was blessed at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Morningside Heights four years ago during a quasi-religious ceremony. "It's like a christening," he said. "The priest holds the baby and we say our prayer at the same time. We have to have the window open and the baby pointed toward the sun."

Once blessed, the child is given yellow beads - the gang's color.

"He's a true gangster. The way he acts with people, the way he just wants to beat you up and punch you," Iron said of the 4-year-old "Latin Prince" he hopes will preach peace within the gang.

One Espicopal priest who "blessed-in" about 300 children kids into the Association Neta and the Latin Kings said he did not see anything wrong with the ceremony.

"It's not a criminal organization," said the Rev. Luis Barrios, who is also a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Barrios was removed from St. Mary's after tussling with his superiors in the Episcopal church.

"It's a street organization with the capacity to bring together young people in search of power, collective identity ... [and] belonging in the society that's rejecting them," Barrios said.

To get into a gang, a recruit often has to get beat up and hurt others to prove their loyalty, but born-in babies gain automatic acceptance.

"The ones that are born in have a little more power and respect," a 21-year-old former Brooklyn Crips member said. "I've seen little kids that you could tell their father is affiliated."

Crips parents refer to their kids' birthdays as "C-Day," instead of "B-Day," so as not to glorify the rival Bloods, he said.

Kids who grow up with gang parents are likely to become bullies at a young age, said Andrew Grascia, president of the New York State Gang Investigators.

"No child is born evil. They're taught evil things," he said. "You're taking a young, very fragile child who's being taught crime by the people who are supposed to secure and

Deal With Gang Violence

In South Los Angeles, many community-based programs are actively working on gang reduction and intervention. These programs, often run by members of the community, make the necessary links between gang membership and societal factors, such as poverty, high unemployment rates, family dysfunction, racism and a lack of positive role models and educational opportunities, using a variety of strategies to address these underlying causes.

In the Schools and After School

Many organizations offer a combination of prevention and intervention, centering their efforts on reaching youth. Based in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts, Kush has been working to curb gang violence since 1999. Its employees are all former or current neighborhood residents who provide positive role models and an alternative to gang membership. Kush offers a gang intervention program that teaches life skills to gang members and young gang-affiliated parolees. Kush’s gang prevention workshops, “Kush Rites,” are tailored to local students and include a mentoring service.

The Venice 2000/H.E.L.P.E.R. organization has a slate of programs, including the Safe Passage program for middle school students and Venice High Safe Passage for students entering and leaving high school. Its Amer-I-Can program teaches self-determination and self-improvement skills. Founded by personal safety and conflict abatement instructor Aquil Basheer, who is featured in CRIPS AND BLOODS, Maximum Force provides gang intervention education to students and community workers, teaching high-risk youth the skills to act without violence in crisis situations.

Community-Based Grassroots Outreach

Unity One, Unity T.W.O. and Unity Three are part of a grassroots network of community-based organizations that work in various L.A. neighborhoods towards gang prevention and intervention, often working at the street level to decrease gang violence and sustain gang ceasefire agreements. Former gang member Bo Taylor, also featured in CRIPS AND BLOODS, founded the organization in the aftermath of the 1992 uprising. Unity One first reaches at-risk individuals through crisis intervention techniques, then teaches decision-making and life management skills to students, community members and detention center inmates.

Aqueela Sherrills, a gang intervention consultant with the Urban Leadership Institute, was raised in the Jordan Downs housing project and has been instrumental in establishing the Community Self-Determination Institute, a Watts-based social-profit agency that has helped sustain peace settlement between gang factions, and the Reverence Movement, a peace-based consulting company.

Advocates 4 Peace & Urban Unity (APUU) focuses on self empowerment and self sufficiency for local youth through community-based outreach and after-school activities. Members are associated with organizations like Venice 2000 and Maximum Force. Compton-based Project Cry No More, whose director Vicky Lindsey was featured in CRIPS AND BLOODS, provides crucial emotional and informational support to families and loved ones of homicide victims. The organization holds bi-monthly support meetings and monthly mothers’ potlucks.

Working with Law Enforcement

Former gang member Skipp Townsend founded 2nd Call to re-educate youth, facilitating life management skills training in L.A. high schools. Townsend has also helped train Los Angeles police and fire department members in gang intervention.

Central Recovery and Development Project (CRDP) is a nonprofit, anti-crime organization founded in 1991. In addition to the CRDP’s gang intervention and mediation programs, the organization partnered with local church members to organize the “Stop the Killin’” campaign in 2002, staging community actions at the sites of gang-related homicides in South L.A. CRDP has organized events, such as peace march vigils, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Police Department.

Tattoo Removal

CleanSlate is one of several organizations, including Homies Unidos, offering tattoo removal services on an affordable sliding scale for former gang members who participate in one of its workshops. Removing a visible gang tattoo can be considered a physical reflection of “starting a new life.” Homies Unidos is part of a network of organizations focusing on gang intervention among Latino youth. The organization began working in L.A. in 1997, and also has roots in anti-violence work in El Salvador.

Funding Services

University of Southern California football coach Pete Carroll founded A Better LA, which sponsors such activities as Moonlight Basketball, a basketball league featuring players from a range of South L.A. neighborhoods. Although A Better LA was not founded by South L.A. community members, it funds efforts towards community building—the idea for the league was proposed by the organization Unity One.

A cluster of neighborhoods in the heart of Southern California is home to two of America's most infamous gangs: the Crips and the Bloods. Over the course of their 40-year feud, more than 15,000 people have been murdered in an ongoing cycle of violence that continues unabated. Neighborhoods are staked out, and rigid boundaries are drawn; crossing a street or taking a wrong turn can mean death. Nearly a quarter of the region’s young men who survive the violence will end up in jail or prison.

Narrated by Forest Whitaker, CRIPS AND BLOODS: Made in America combines in-depth interviews with current and former gang members, educators, historians, family members and experts with historical and present-day footage to graphically portray the rivalry between African American gangs in South Los Angeles. Three former gang members—Ron, Bird and Kumasi—recount their experiences growing up in the neighborhood in the 1950s, when segregation kept blacks and whites strictly separated, both by police-enforced neighborhood boundaries and in public organizations like the Boy Scouts. Young black males began forming their own groups, clubs where they could find a sense of belonging. Fighting between rival clubs became part of that culture, but the only weapons then were a strong pair of fists.

The 1950s were a period of black prosperity in Los Angeles, fed by the abundance of industry-based jobs. By the end of the decade, however, those industries began to disappear, resulting in high rates of unemployment. This downward economic spiral along with years of prejudice, racial profiling and heavy-handed police methods, produced an explosive situation. In 1965, a routine traffic stop erupted into full-scale civil conflict on the streets of Watts. The FBI killed and jailed many leaders of the era’s Black Pride Movement, and without strong leadership to steer youth in positive directions, gangs became active once more. This time, their weapons were guns.

In the film, current gang members describe gang life and the status, protection and other benefits membership gives them, painting a bleak picture of the physical, social and personal devastation that is the hallmark of South Los Angeles. Academics and other experts, including California State Senator Tom Hayden and author Gerald Horne, suggest ways of solving underlying problems, rather than just attacking gang-related street violence. Meanwhile, the most promising solutions may come from the people in the neighborhood itself, where former gang members and other concerned individuals have taken on the task of working with young people and providing a positive alternative to gang membership.

Director Stacy Peralta (Dogtown and Z Boys, Riding Giants) brings his trademark dynamic visual style and storytelling ability to this often-ignored chapter of America's history. 104 Are Arrested in Connection With Crips-Bloods Alliance

The Flocc street gang had an unusual mix of members. It formed out of an alliance, law enforcement officials said, between two groups that have traditionally been rivals: the Crips and the Bloods.

As the gang muscled its way into the drug trade in Far Rockaway and South Jamaica, Queens, and police officers on foot patrols started proving a nuisance to their business, at least one of their members hatched a plan to shoot them from a rooftop, the officials said.

On Friday, law enforcement authorities announced dozens of arrests as a result of a two-year investigation into the gang that they said tied it to at least 2 murders, 11 shootings, a home-invasion robbery and the distribution of cocaine and heroin.

The investigation included thousands of hours of wiretap surveillance by the Police Department’s gang squad and the Queens district attorney’s narcotics investigations bureau.

The investigation began as an examination of narcotics trafficking by Crips and Bloods gangs in the area, officials said. But last year, investigators determined that four gangs with Crips affiliations had joined forces with individual Blood members to create a gang known as Flocc, a derivation of the word “flock,” with the “k” replaced by a “c” for Crip.

The police said 104 people had been arrested and 8 were still being sought. Investigators also seized 60 guns, including AK-47s, Uzi submachine guns and dozens of semiautomatic handguns and revolvers.

Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and the Queens district attorney, Richard A. Brown, stood before a table covered with guns on Friday at 1 Police Plaza to announce the arrests. One of the guns displayed was referred to by the police as a 9-millimeter assault rifle.

That was the rifle the police say Keith Livingston, 40, of South Jamaica, planned to use to shoot officers on foot patrol in Jamaica. The police arrested him in September after hearing him discuss his plans on a wiretapped phone, they said. He has pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal possession of a weapon and conspiracy.

The investigation also led to the arrest of Farrad Smith, 23, a former correction officer who the police say was storing weapons for high-ranking gang members. Police officers searching his Far Rockaway apartment said they found a 9-millimeter pistol that had been stolen from another correction officer, a 12-gauge shotgun and a loaded AK-47.

The police said they arrested the leaders of all four gangs tied to Flocc, including the person officials said was the leader of the entire operation, Gquan Lloyd, 23. He has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon and possession of stolen property. He was being held on $350,000 bail.

Vancouver RCMP Blood Gang Investigation

An Edmonton police officer who testified at the Ian Bush inquest in Houston in July says he was recently threatened by a Vancouver RCMP member.

Const. Joe Slemko's testimony cast doubt on whether RCMP Const. Paul Koester, who shot Bush during a struggle, told the truth.

Considered by many to be Canada's pre-eminent blood-spatter expert, Slemko said yesterday he was threatened by an RCMP sergeant at a police conference in San Antonio, Texas.

"It was pretty tense because it was our international blood-stain conference," Slemko said.

He said he and the RCMP sergeant were checking out of the hotel when the threat was made.

"There were only the two of us standing there and it was a little uncomfortable," said Slemko. "I said I hope next year is a little better for us both.

"He reached over and shook my hand and said, 'I hope we can do for you what you've done to us.'

"I said, 'Is that fair? It's all part of the game.'

"He says, 'It's not a game. You watch your back!'"

Slemko said he doesn't "anticipate a physical threat from them, but basically, they were going to get back at me in some form."

There's no doubt in his mind the incident arose from the Bush case.

"He works out of the the same office as the blood-stain analyst who testified [for the RCMP] in the Bush case," said Slemko, who has not filed a complaint.

RCMP watchdog Paul Kennedy is to release his report into the force's handling of the Bush case today.

EXPERT MAKES ENEMIES

The RCMP have complained about Const. Joe Slemko before.

After testifying as an expert witness for the defence at a preliminary hearing in a murder trial that led to charges against the accused being dropped, an angry RCMP staff-sergeant alleged that Slemko was in a conflict of interest and should be punished. The Edmonton Police Commission ordered the matter be dropped, but Slemko no longer provides blood-stain analysis for the Edmonton police. He now works as a private expert for hire.

Slemko is also part of a chorus of voices calling for civilian oversight of the RCMP. "Every other agency in Canada is going in that direction," he says.

West Side Rollin' 20s NeighborHood Blood

Brief History: In the 1950s there was a gang in this area called Blood Alley on Cordova Street near the Santa Monica Freeway. In the early 1970s when black gangs resurged, the youth continued the Blood identity. They identified as Neighborhood, then Neighborhood Blood, then Neighborhood Rollin 20s Blood. They eventually developed in 5 subsets, 25th, 27th, 29th, 2nd Avenues (SAG), and Black Demon Soldiers (BDS).

This neighborhood is briefly mentioned in Chapter 6 of Eight Tray Gangster Crip (83rd GC) member, Sanyika Shakur's (Kody Scott) book, Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member, 1993. Shakur recalls a night taking the bus from downtown Los Angeles to his neighborhood in South LA where he discusses neighborhoods that he traveled through.

In Chapter 5 of Steve Herbert's, Policing Space, 1997 he recalls this neighborhood as he was researching the LAPD for eight months in Los Angeles and in City of Quartz, 1990 by Mike Davis, he mentions in Chapter 5, how an unarmed innocent affiliate of this neighborhood was shot on Adams Boulevard by the LAPD on April 5, 1988.

Journalist Kathy Braidhill wrote Where the Boyz Are for "Los Angeles Magazine" in January 1998 where she mentions this neighborhood and others.

The NHood 20s have the largest territory of any Blood gang in Los Angeles County, and have the 3rd largest neighborhood of black gangs in LA County. They were once closely associated with Hoover Family, a neighborhood by Hoover Park on Adams and Hoover, but they faded out around 1978.

Miller Gangsters Bloods 2010

The Miller Gangster Bloods are an African American street gang formed in the east side of South Central, Los Angeles in the 1970's. Their territory reaches south of the 105 Freeway to 120th Street in the south (the 120 Miller Gangsters being the largest sub set), between Avalon Blvd. (west) and Central Avenue (east). The E/S MGB are close allies of the Athens Park Bloods (graffiti barring the tag Athens Miller is a strong indication of this alliance) and are considered enemies of the 118th East Coast Blocc Crips', 116th Avalon Gangster Crips, Holmes Street Watts Crips, 104 Hard Time Hustler Crips and the 116th Kitchen Crips. East Coast founder of the United Blood Nation O.G Mack claimed to have family in this gang who supposedly sanctioned him to start his own chapter of the Bloods in New York City.

Mad Swan Bloods 2010

Brief History:The Swans are believed to have been started by Elvis, aka Dead Arm Elvis around 1973. He was eventually killed at Manchester Park several years later but his legend is well known. The Swans were first known as the 77 Main Street Swans in the early 1970s before they were known as Bloods and they were once allied with the Main Street Crips in the area.

Before the Swans were established in this area, the Castle Crips were active but they have since faded. The Swan neighborhood is around Fremont High School and this is where Raymond Washington started his first Crip set back in 1970 when he lived on 76th Street. Over the years, the Swans had formed four sub clicks; 77th Street, 79th Street, 80th Street, and 84th Street. They have two more clicks (89/92) with the Family Swan Bloods located immediately to the south.

Although Pee Wee from 80 Swan is currently on death row awaiting execution, some members of the Swams have been actively involved with trying to establish peace among different neighborhoods. These members have formed an organization called Unity T.W.O Inc., a gang intervention organization aimed at preventing gang violence in the community.

Former NFL wide receiver Charles Jordan was from this neighborhood and continued to claim it when he was on the Miami Dolphins in 1997. Star NBA point guard Baron Davis grew up in this neighborhood and supports a basketball program in the Swans community.

In the documentary film "Made in America" directed by Stacy Peralta, Swan member Shaka was featured along with people from several other Los Angeles sets.

Dalton Gangster Bloods 2010

Brief History: This neighborhood is not active and faded out in the mid 1980s but here is the run down on Dalton Gangster Bloods as told by one of their early members.

In mid 1977 a family moved on to Dalton Avenue, the oldest brother was an Athens Park Bloods (APB) member. At this time there was no real gang activity on Dalton Avenue between King Blvd and Vernon Avenue. There were Rollin' 30 Harlem Crips and Denker Park Crips just to the north who knew people in the area, and there was actually a time when we organized street football games with 30's on Dalton. During one of these games tempers flared and the word BLOOD was thrown out toward a Denker Park player. More words were passed, some pushing and shoving, and within two days word got around that DALTON was occupied by BLOOD gang members.

These were the very beginning days of the history of Dalton Gangster Bloods. There were "INFORMAL' contacts between various 30's and "DALTON BOYS" but at this time there was no official gang activity in progress on Dalton.

When a particular Harlem Crip decided that he would get to the bottom of things on Dalton, a conflict came about between him and the APB member. It was a one-on-one fistfight. Needless to say the fight ended with the Harlem Crip vowing to return with some homies to get a little payback. Naturally, it being a head-up fight, everybody on Dalton thought it uncool to threaten neighbor/friend.

Things went on this way until 1978 when another family moved in whose oldest brother was a Centinella Park Blood from Inglewood. The brother under him was a VAN NESS Blood (VNG) member. It was at this time that actual violent conflicts began to occur between Harlem 30's and the Dalton residents. It came about that a younger brother in this family was having a bad time with certain Crips in the area. He was a very good friend and street football companion. His cause was taken up by several residents on Dalton and at this point a definite Blood allegiance was formed. The "Dalton Boys" and then the Dalton Gangster (in aligning itself with the Van Ness Gangster's). Naturally Blood was added to the end to show allegiance.

There were members who thought of DGB's as an extension of the VNG's. There are actually some who still say that, some that have actually crossed over and now claim VNG. There are still a few however that saw these two neighborhoods as allied, but seperate. These were "42 DALTON GANGSTER BRIMS", the boundries were Dalton Av between King Bl and Vernon Av. 42nd Place being in the middle of these two blocks. Though everyone here were all "Dalton Boys" the absolute proper name is "42 DALTON GANGSTA' BRIMS".

By the mid 1980s many members moved, or began claiming VNG and the Rollin 40s Crip eventually occupied the area.

Bloods/Crips proposal for LA’s face-lift

Burned and abandoned structures: Every burned and abandoned structure shall be gutted. The city will purchase the property if not already owned by the city, and build a community centre. If the structure is on a corner or vacant lot, the city will build a career couselling centre or a recreation area respectively.

Repavement: All pavements/sidewalks in Los Angeles are in dire need of resurfacing. The Department of Transportation shall pay special attention to the pedestrian walkways and surface streets located in predominantly poor and minority areas. Our organisation will assist the city in the identification of all areas of concern.

Lighting: All lighting will be increased in all neighborhoods. Additionally, lighting of city streets, neighbourhood blocks and alleyways will be amended. We want a well-lit neighbourhood. All alleys shall be painted white or yellow by the building owners and alley lights will be installed at the cost of the owner.

Landscaping: All trees will be properly trimmed and maintained. We want all weeds/shrubbed areas to be cleaned up and properly nurtured. New trees will be planted to increase the beauty of our neighbourhoods

Sanitation: A special task force shall be assigned to clean up all vacant lots and trashed areas throughout the deprived areas. Proper pest control methods shall be implemented by the city. The city will declare a neighbourhood clean-up week wherein all residents will be responsible for their block -- a block captain will be assigned to ensure cooperation.

Blood/Crips Educational Proposal

1) Maximising education standards in the low income areas is essential to reduce the possibilities of repeated insurrection. The Blood/Crips propose that:

a) $300 million will go into the reconstruction and refurbishment of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) structures.
b) $200 million will be donated for computers, supplies and updated books (each student shall have necessary books).
c) All teachers’ salaries shall be no less than $30,000 a year to give them an incentive to education in our districts.
d) Re-election shall be held for all Los Angeles Board of Education members

2) Reconstruction shall include repainting, sandblasting and reconstruction of all LAUSD schools; remodelling of classrooms, repainting of hallways and meeting areas; all schools shall have new landscaping and more plants and trees around the schools; completely upgrade the bathrooms, making them more modern; provide a bathroom monitor to each bathroom which will provide fresh-up toiletries at a minimum cost to the students.

3) A provision for accelerated educational learning programmes shall be implemented for the entire LAUSD to provide aggressive teaching methods and provide a curriculum similar to non-economically deprived areas. Tutoring for all subjects will be made available to all students after school hours. It will be mandatory for all students with sub-level grades to participate.

In these after-school tutorial programmes, those students whose grades are up to par will receive federally funded bonus bonds that will be applied to their continued education upon graduation from high school. They will also receive bonus bonds for extra scholastic work towards assisting their fellow students. All institutions shall maintain a second shift of substitute teachers in the schools to enforce educational excellence.

Special financial bonuses shall be given to students who focus on education beyond the school’s requirement in the areas of applied maths and sciences. High achievers in these areas shall be granted a free trip to another country for educational exchange. Fifty students from each school will be granted this opportunity each year for an indefinite period.

4) The LAUSD will provide up-to-date books to the neglected areas and enough books to ensure that no student has to share a book with another.

5) LAUSD will remove all teachers not planning to further their education along with teachers who have not proven to have a passionate concern for the students. All teachers shall be given a standard competence test to verify they are up-to-date with subjects and modern teaching methods. Psychological testing will also be required for all teachers and educational administrations. All teachers shall be given a competency test verify they are up to date with subjects and modern testing methods.

6) All curriculums shall focus on the basics in high school requirements and it shall be inundated with advanced sciences and additional applied math, English and writing skills.

7) Bussing shall become non-existent in our community if all of the above demands are met.

Blood/Crips Human Welfare Proposal

Hospitals and Health Care Centres.: Federal government shall provide the deprived areas with three new hospitals and 40 additional health care centres. Dental clinics shall be made available with ten miles of each community. The services shall be free and supported by federal and state funds.

Welfare: We demand that welfare be removed from our community and welfare programmes be replaced by state work and product manufacturing plants that provide the city with certain supplies. State monies shall only be provided for invalids and the elderly. The State of California shall be provide a child welfare building to serve as day care centres for single parents.

Parks & Recreation: Los Angeles parks shall receive a complete face-lift, and developed activities and programmes in the parks throughout the night. Stages, pools and courts shall be reconstructed and resurfaced, and the city shall provide highly visible security 24-hours a day for these parks and recreational centres. Programmes at the parks shall be in accordance with educational programmes and social exchange programmes developed by the city for adults and young adults.

Blood/Crips Law Enforcement Programme

The Los Angeles Communities are demanding that they are policed and patrolled by individuals who live in the community and the commanding officers by ten-year residents of the community in which they serve. Former gang members shall be given a chance to be patrol buddies in assisting the protection of the neighbourhoods. These former gang members will be required to go through police training and must comply with all of the laws instituted by our established authorities. Uniforms will be issued to each and every member of the “buddy system”, however no weapons will be issued. All patrol units must have a buddy patrol notified and present in the event of a police matter. Each buddy patrol will be supplied with a video camera and will tape each event and the officers handling the police matter. The buddy patrol will not interfere with any police matter, unless instructed by a commanding officer. Each buddy patrol will also be supplied with a vehicle.

Blood/Crips Economic Development Proposal

Loans shall be made available by the federal and state governments to provide interested minority entrepreneurs interested in doing business in these deprived areas. The loan requirements shall not be so stringent that it will make it impossible for a businessman to acquire these loans. These loans shall not exceed a 4 per cent interest bearing charge per year. The businessman shall not be required to have security for the loan. However, the businessman must present at least two years of business operations and taxes, with a city licence before funds will be allocated. The owner must have either an established business desiring to expand or a sound business plan. Assistance for business plans shall be made available to these businessmen by the Small Business Administration. Additionally, the Small Business Administration will provide agents to help each business to develop a sound business plan from beginning to end. No one will be neglected in receiving adequate assistance. These business owners shall be required to hire 90 per cent of their personnel from within the community and the monies shall not be distributed in a lump sum. Funds will be released in increments outlined by the business plan. Any businessman that doesn’t conform to the hiring practices will have funding ceased until they conform.
In return for these demands, the Blood/Crips Organisation will:

1) Request the drug lords of Los Angeles take their monies and invest them in business and property in Los Angeles
2) Encourage these drug lords to stop drug traffic and get them to use the money constructively. We will match the funds of the state government appropriations and build building-for-building.
3) We will match funds for an Aids research and awareness centre in South Central and Long Beach that will only hire minority researchers and physicians in the Aids epidemic.

The sister of a Sydney teenager bashed by a gang of balaclava-clad men says it was revenge for a nightclub incident.

Linda, who did not wish to give her last name, told smh.com.au how her 18-year-old brother Lee was left with a fractured skull, broken left wrist, stitches to his head and severe bruising to his right arm after being beaten by 15 men armed with baseball bats and metal poles.

Lee had finished a workout at the Coolibah Fitness Centre, in Paton Street, Merrylands, about 9pm yesterday, and had got into his car when he was set upon by the group.

"They opened the car doors, five of them started bashing him, he didn't know any of them," Linda said.

She said Lee scrambled out of the car, hit the ground and covered his head, as the 15 started bashing him.

"They were saying, in Lebanese [Lee and his family are Lebanese-Australian], 'Keep bashing him on the head, keep bashing him on the head.' "

The gang smashed the Toyota four-wheel-drive Lee had been driving and took his wallet and mobile phone.

Witnesses chased the attackers off and called emergency services.

The attackers fled in a green Honda Civic, a ute, and a red sedan, witnesses said.

Linda said the attack was retribution for an incident at the Vernadah Bar, in the CBD's Castlereagh Street four weeks ago, when Lee and three of his cousins had an encounter with the other men.

"My cousin was dancing with a girl and eight of the guys surrounded him and they wanted to start him," she said.

The two groups went outside and Lee and his cousins "bashed" the other group of men - whom Linda said were in their mid-20s.

The attack last night was not the first time the gang has sought revenge for the nightclub incident, she said.

They had attacked one of the cousins from the nightclub, David, 25, as he left the Coolibah gym two weeks ago.

She said 20 of them turned up, wearing balaclavas but David, who has a black belt in tae kwon do, chased them off.

"If anyone has any information go to Merrylands police. Even anonymously. Because there were so many people there I'm sure a lot of people saw a lot of things."

Difference Between Crips and Bloods 2010

Crips was a gang formed in Los Angeles, USA in the late sixties and early seventies. Bloods was mainly a gang formed by smaller street gangs coming together to counter the growing influence of the Crips. The main gang that formed the Bloods was Piru Street Boys.

Raymond Washington formed a gang by the name Baby Avenues or Avenue Cribs signifying the young age of the members of the gang. The gang initially propagated the philosophy that it wanted to protect its neighborhood from outsiders but this claim soon faded away and the gang was openly involved in various criminal activities including robbery, murders, drug dealings, etc. Raymond Washington united his gang with that of Stanley Williams from the east and west side of Los Angles to form an alliance to protect their areas of influence. Washington disliked guns and preferred to settle all differences by hand to hand fights. However, as more and more local gangs joined in and made Crips one of the largest associations of street gangs, his influence diminished till finally he was shot dead in 1979. The gang members were primarily African Americans and had a particular affinity for blue color in their dressing.

The Crips began to target other gangs as they grew in size. It was in this time that some of the non-Crip gangs got together to form an alliance. The main among them were the Pirus or the Piru Street Boys. The gang formed out of this alliance came to be known as Bloods. The members of the Bloods have a particular affinity for the color red in the clothing to identify themselves. The smaller gangs associated with the alliance began to be known as sets. The influence spread across the United States in a few years. The sets on the eastern coast became associated with United Bloods Nation or UBN and this too soon came to be known as only Bloods.

During opening statements in a federal gang trial Tuesday, prosecutors promised to unveil the "violent" world of the Tree Top Piru, a deadly set of the Bloods gang formed, they say, in a Maryland jail to gain territory and respect through fear.

Members are dealers, murderers and robbers, said prosecutor Christopher Mason, who plans to prove it in part through the testimony of a key witness: the gang's founder.

It's an ironic arrangement, given that Bloods have appeared in the two "Stop Snitching" underground videos, which threaten would-be informants. The government plans to introduce the second DVD as evidence, claiming Tree Top Piru used it as a recruitment tool to expand the gang's reach.

Nearly two years after 28 people were charged in a 20-count indictment that alleged drug dealing, weapons possession and five murders, trial for two of the defendants began Tuesday. Most others have entered guilty pleas, and 14 of them have been sentenced to a combined 188 years in federal prison.

Some, like TTP founder Steve Willock of Hagerstown, made deals with the government, exchanging testimony for whatever it was worth. In Willock's case, he was sentenced to 25 years instead of life.

Both Baltimore's Ronnie Thomas, who appears in "Stop Snitching 2," and Salisbury's Sherman Pride are charged with racketeering for their alleged gang affiliation, while Pride alone is also charged with drug dealing, which carries a maximum life sentence.

Their attorneys told Judge William Quarles and the jurors on Tuesday that the government didn't have a case.

Thomas was in jail for most of the time period outlined in the indictment, said lawyer Michael D. Montemarano, adding that there was no "substantive evidence" against his client, just "bought-and-paid-for Bloods" testifying with little credibility.

But prosecutors say bars don't always prevent illegal activity. The indictment broke open the gang's secret world, providing a glossary of terms and highlighting the problem of cell phones smuggled into jail.

Law enforcement agents say Willock ran the gang from his cell in a Cumberland jail, often through a contraband cell phone.

Department of Corrections Secretary Gary D. Maynard testified about the issue in Annapolis before the state legislature Tuesday, hoping to make it a felony to possess a cell phone in jail, punishable by up to five years in prison.

In court, attorney Harry D. McKnett said Pride met Willock in jail, and McKnett acknowledged that "from time to time," the young man associated with gang members.

"So what?" he added. "Simply identifying yourself as a Blood does not make you a criminal."

It's a frequent defense raised for people charged with racketeering under federal law, which allows gang members to be held responsible for their associates' crimes. The prosecution method commonly leads to sweeping arrests and lengthy prison terms.

Three-quarters of the 28 people indicted in February 2008 faced maximum terms of life in prison on various charges. But the longest term doled out so far is 30 years, and the shortest is probation.

Public records show at least 18 defendants have pleaded guilty in the case so far. A trial for the remaining defendants is scheduled for March.

While the Bloods are not an actual prison gang they are recognized as part of the 11 Security Threat Groups identified by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

In the early 70's, the ""Bloods"" were born. More out of necessity than anything else, the "Blood" sets were banded together to protect each other from the rampant Crip menace. The "Bloods" originated when Sylvester Scott and Vincent Owens started the "Compton Pirus", this gang started on West Piru Street in Compton. An event which assisted the rapid growth of the blood sets occurred when the Compton "Crips" had a difference of opinion with the "Pirus", the two gangs had a major fight and the outnumbered Pirus were badly beaten. This prompted a meeting between several fragmented gang sets on Piru Street, the "Denver Lanes", "Laurdes Park Hustlers", "Bishops" and "LA Brims" were in attendance. The "Pirus" aligned themselves with the "Laurdes Park Hustlers" and the "LA Brims", the Brims were eager to join alliance against the "Crips" as the "Crips" recently murdered a Brim gangster and the Brims were too small to exact revenge against the "Crips" without major reprisals. Other gangs who had been threatened or attacked by "Crips" incorporated into Blood sets as well. The Compton "red" gangs are called "Pirus", other "red" gangs such as the "Brims", "Bounty Hunters", "Swans" and "Family" refer to themselves as ""Bloods"". Numerically, the Blood sets are outnumbered by the Crip sets, but "Bloods" are well known for their "take no prisoners" ruthless and violence.

With all these gangs roaming in a relatively small section of the city, gangsters needed a method in which to ID each other, they wanted to avoid attacking gangsters from different sets, but same gang. "Crips" identify themselves with the color blue, this is believed to originate from the colors of Washington high school in south LA. Crip gangsters wear articles of blue clothing, blue and kerchiefs, shoelaces, hair rollers, hats, belts or sweat shirts. A blue article of clothing in a blood hood, can and will get you killed. Other dark colors have been used as well, such as black, brown and purple. If they are unsure of ones gang affiliation, they'll flash a gang "sign" which is basically a form of sign language made with the hands, they also refer to each other as "Cuz" or "Blood" depending to set affiliation.

"Bloods" ID each other with the color "red", school colors of Centennial High School, and obviously red is the color of blood. Like "Crips" who wear blue clothing, "Bloods" wear red. Another color may be used in relation to the name of the set, such as green for the Lime Hood Pirus. They refer to each other as "Blood".

By the 1980's, there were 30,000 gangsters in and around LA. The 80's also saw the explosion of crack cocaine, criminal street gangs were quick to jump on the crack bandwagon which grew into today's gang cancer. The majority of these gangsters were from the inner city ghettos where unemployment is very high and families are living at, or under the poverty level. It's near impossible to tell a 15 year old gangster that joining a gang was a bad thing because it was the gangsters that are making $300-$500 a day selling crack. The gangsters have what many ghetto youths don't, expensive clothing, new expensive cars, gold "rope" jewelry, wads of cash in their pockets and lots of girls. A common comment I hear is "Why should I work at Mac-Donald's when I can make more money than you?", rebuttals of being a good citizen and about responsibility go in one ear and out the other.

Black gangs have no formal structure to speak of, the older members in their late 20's early 30's, are called the "Shot Callers". Most "Shot Callers" have done hard time in prison where they made "business" contacts, they are the ones who deal in the major acquisition of drugs, the youngsters are often the foot solders who do the selling, fighting and dying. The young members are generally the most dangerous because they're willing to prove their gang loyalty by committing extremely violent acts, which often times includes shooting at, or otherwise fighting with police officers. We find the juveniles are often used to commit violent crimes because they face little, or no jail time and they know it. More than a hundred times they've bragged to me "I'll be home before you're done writing the report", which is true, by law we must release juveniles to their guardians. The juveniles are also the ones who are driving the "G" rides, in my experience 90% of the time.

Because of the large sums of cash made by dealing, these gangs are able to arm themselves with expensive, high quality weapons. Some gangs have actually purchased legitimate businesses to launder the money, one South Central liquor store reported $500,000 in profits one year, that's a lot of bubble gum and Old English 800. Were finding that more and more professionals like CPA's, accounts and what we call "dope lawyers" are willing to assist these gangs because they are rewarded handsomely for their services. Most gangsters are poorly educated and ill prepared to thrive in the real business world, add a CPA, investment banker and lawyer to help manage the large amounts of cash generated by gangs and they have almost unlimited potential. An unfortunate side effect is that some black owned business from South LA are cynically viewed as dirty, "Death Row Records", a rap music publisher, has long been suspected as a major drug laundering business.

We're also finding more and more dope lawyers defending these gangsters in criminal proceedings, I often wonder how a 18 year unemployed Crip can afford a $500 per hour Ivy League attorney. Some of these dope lawyers operate under the guise of wanting to give the poor black inner city youth the best defense possible and claim to be working "pro bono" (for free), more than once they've been found with large sums of un taxable cash in backpacks or duffel bags. These attorneys risk falling victim to the short fuse and violent tendencies of these gangsters, which offers an added motivation to make sure their client is acquitted. Rival gangs, or even disgruntled fellow gangsters have more than once ambushed a dope lawyer and stolen his cash reward.

Blood Gang 2010

By late 1971 the Avalon Garden and the Inglewood Crips had joined forces with the other sets and began to engage in warfare with oposing sets. They began to expand to non-Crip gang territories controlled by gangs including The L.A. Brims, a powerful street gang, beginning in 1969 on the Westside. The Crips targeted these gangs because they were not Crips, which made them a main target for Crips sets to attack. Several gangs eventually became part of the Bloods family, including the Bishops and Athens Park boys. The Denver Lanes also had conflicts with the Crips, but were outnumbered and eventually became unknown in California for some time. The Piru Street Boys who presented a powerful force in Compton, actually collaborated with the Crips prior to 1972, as the Crips had affected the Piru neighborhoods. For a short time the Pirus were known as the Piru Street Crips, and they also wore the traditional blue rags (bandana) and blue Chucks (sneakers) as part of their attire.

During the summer of 1972 the Crips and the Pirus had a conflict and warfare ensued. The Pirus, like other northern gangs, were outnumbered and the Crips prevailed. The Pirus wanted to terminate peaceful relations with the Crips, so they turned to the Lueders Park Hustlers for assistance. The Lueders Park Hustlers agreed and a meeting was called on Piru Street. The Pirus also invited every gang targeted by Crips sets to join the meeting. The Crips had murdered an L.A.Brim member earlier that year, so the Brims attended the meeting, as well. Others that attended were the Denver Lanes and the Bishops.

At the meeting, the groups discussed how to combat Crips intimidation, along with the creation of a new alliance to counter the Crips. At that time the color of bandanas was not important, but since the Crips were known to wear blue bandanas, the Pirus and the other groups decided to discontinue the wearing of blue bandanas. They decided to take on the wearing of an opposite color, red, and created a united organization which later became known as the Bloods. The Pirus, Brims, Athens Park Boys, and Pueblos decided to unite with the Bloods, and soon after, other gangs who had been threatened or attacked by Crips joined the Bloods.

Contrary to popular belief, real Bloods do not represent any People Nation 5 point star and are not part of the People Nation Alliance. The confusion of Bloods representing the People Nation’s 5 point star started on the internet with unknown persons creating various fictional “Blood Books of Knowledge” which consist of mixing Blood history and People Nation history, symbols, and literature (lit) together. These fictional “Books of Knowledge” spread rapidly throughout the internet and eventually into the streets with wanna-be’s taking these books serious and being mislead. There are, however, legit Bloods who use the terms “5 popping”, “We ride the 5", and who replace the letter “S” with a “5", but when a Blood uses the number 5 it simply symbolizes the number of letters in the word B.L.O.O.D. So when a Blood calls himself “5" he is infact simply reffering to himself as “BLOOD”. This use of the number 5 may have also lead the the confusion of Bloods representing the People Nation's 5 point star. This misrepresentation of the Bloods and the number 5 has largely affected Bloods in the South, East Coast, and some parts of the Midwest. This widespread miseducation of the Bloods has lead to a recent major outreach by west coast Bloods to all Bloods across the country to let them know that Bloods do not represent the People Nation of Chicago and do not represent any form of a 5 point star. This outreach has been making a major impact on Bloods in the South, East, and Midwest who have all been dropping all use of anything related to the People Nation and a 5 point star and are all steady getting back to their roots.

Blood sets have a loose structure of ranks based on how long a person has been banging for their particular hood and how much work they put in for the hood. Their rank structure is as follows:

These ranks don’t signify leadership or dominance over anybody else in the set, they just signify respect for those who have been in the hood longer, put in more work for the hood, and have survived the longest. This means that Bloods with higher rank don’t give out orders or call shots over those with lower rank. Bloods with higher rank are respectfully reffered to as “Big Homies” by Bloods with lower rank (they also refer to each other as Relatives). Once a person has joined a Blood set, it’s for life… meaning you can not leave the set or flip (switch) to another set.

Best Blood Knowledge 2010

My colleagues Andrea van der Merwe, Paul Keursten and I are involved in an exciting new initiative at the University of the Free State to help strengthen a culture of customer service at the University. It is a fascinating time to be working there – earlier in January we had the opportunity to witness the registration process and see the new students finding their way around. This is the first year in which the students’ residences are integrated as a matter of policy. And of course the impact is visible, as residential groups undertake library tours etc together. Students who, in previous years, needed to be segregated by race, happily mixing and socialising together in their first days – as if apartheid had never existed.

Of course, we are not suddenly all living under a glorious rainbow and there may be problems along the way, but this represents an important step forward in transforming the education system in this country. And this is due in no small part to the efforts of Professor Jonathan Jansen, Vice-Chancellor of the University. Jansen recently published an important book ‘Knowledge in the Blood’, in which he addresses issues of race in the education system – particularly through the lens of white Afrikaner students as he got to know them in his previous position at the University of Pretoria.

The concept of ‘knowledge in the blood’ he describes as “knowledge embedded in the emotional, psychic, spiritual, social, economic, political and psychological lives of a community”. Jansen acknowledges Irish poet Macdara Woods as the originator of the term, which he (Woods) saw as meaning “the sum total of what we learn … of love, disappointment, age, loss, and how this knowledge can both make the necessary ongoing human reaffirmation of life and hope possible and at the same time hinder it…”

It is this ‘knowledge in the blood’ that sets up a challenge to any well-designed transformation process, as this deep knowledge will not easily be displaced by new value statements or training courses in ubuntu. But it also provides an opportunity – perhaps the key opportunity at this point in South Africa’s history – the opportunity to build a new knowledge, with new stories, heroic leaders, miracles and healing wells. And this knowledge to be a unifying concept - shared and wondered at by future generations.

Idealistic? Perhaps, but I hope these ideas can contribute to addressing very real challenges we face in South Africa.

Jansen, later in his book, provides valuable insights that should be compulsory reading for teachers, facilitators and leaders in our society. His ideas about demonstrative leadership and a dialogue that can help people move towards each other can be valuable also in our political discourse. And give courage to he faint-hearted who may feel a disconnect between their own ‘blood knowledge’ and what passes for political correctness in post-apartheid South Africa.

There are numerous gangs in New Zealand, of varying criminality, organisation and ethnicity. According to the New Zealand Police, the three most prominent New Zealand gangs are Black Power (not related to the African-American movement); the Mongrel Mob, and the Nomads.[1] Other gangs are prominent in particular areas, for example the Junior Don Kings (JDK) and Dope Money Sex (DMS) in Central Auckland.[2]

According to the book Gangs by Ross Kemp, New Zealand has more gangs per head then any other country in the world,[3] with about seventy major gangs and over 4,000 patched members[4] in a population of about 4,000,000 people.

According to sociologist Jarrod Gilbert, New Zealand has had problems with youth and street gangs since the 1950s.[5] However organised crime gangs such as those which currently dominate the New Zealand scene mostly date from the 1970s. 'Gangsta' style gangs have been a presence in New Zealand since the early 1990s but individual gangs of this type are typically short lived.[1] New Zealand gangs have generally been heavily influenced by their American counterparts. Although Black Power takes its name from the black liberation movement of the same name, in many ways it and similar gangs are much more akin to white American motorcycle gangs such as the Hell's Angels. Since the early 1990s newer gangs have primarily been influenced by African American street gangs such as the Crips and Bloods.[5]

Gang members are a minority of New Zealand criminals. A New Zealand Ministry of Justice study showed that in 1991 just under 80% of prison inmates had no gang history, and just over 90% had no current gang membership. Of the prison population, 4% were members of the Mongrel Mob and 4.3% former members, while 3.6% were current and 3.2% former members of Black Power. No other gang had more than one percent of the prison population.[6] A similar study in 2003 showed that 11.3% of prison inmates were gang members. Of these, about a third each were Mongrel Mob or Black Power, with no other gangs having more than 5% of the imprisoned gang population.[7]
